In 1875 Isaac Norris built a sawmill on what is now known as Morris Avenue which enabled him to ply his trade in lumber until he started producing cheese in 1898 On October 12th 1903 James Fenton donated land comprising most of what is today's Borough Park to be used as a public park which still operates today During World War II Carteret played an important role as Naval Ammunition Depot No 4 (now Demarest) where munitions were manufactured for use in the Pacific Theater The first post office opened in 1907 with Pemberton serving as its first mail clerk

The last warship based here was USS Constitution (1865-1868) which anchored off shore while troops fought against Spanish forces at Palo Alto Bay during Chief Manuel Noriega's Nicaraguan Revolution that year. However despite this history and closure of Naval Station Carteret there are still many reminders of why this small town has been so important historically: its location on Route 9 just north of Monmouth County Executive Airport makes it easily accessible for tourists (or those who want to explore rural Monmouth County), its comfortable living conditions for middle-class residents and businesses alike; and its sizable population – especially among military veterans – who have helped keep things alive over these years since it left Naval Station Carteret behind."
