He also built a small cabin with some shotguns and rifles inside it as well as an outbuilding that served as his shooting galleries and arsenal. In 1861, Colonel Barnard was colonel of the 3rd Regiment Delaware Volunteers when he moved his regiment from Newark to Carteret and continued to use this property until 1865 when he sold it to Captain Samuel Howland for $2,000. In 1872, Captain Howland built another shotgun range on what is now known as Second Street in Carteret. This range became known as Howland’s Rifle Range and continues to be used today by members of the community. In 1901, Captain John Witherspoon purchased the entire block between Third Street and Fourth Avenue from Colonel Isaac N. Barnard for $8,500 dollars which has been used today as First Presbyterian Church (now Congregational). Captain Witherspoon continued to use part of what is now First Presbyterian Church (now Congregational) until 1906 when he sold it to Mr. Gwyneth Taft for $15,000 dollars which has been used by Mr Taft ever since for Religious services and other activities within the community including schoolsponsored fairs/fairs etc..

The first Europeans to sight Carteret were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on October 24, 1614 when they landed on what is now known as Point Pleasant Beach. They named it "Verrazzano's Cape" after their leader. In 1764, Carteret was burned by British forces during the French and Indian War. The town was rebuilt and its name changed to Carteret after General John Carteret who had helped defeat the British in that war. In 1853, the Township of Hackett formed from parts of Carleton township and portions of West Carteret Township and became section 8 of Middlesex County with headquarters in Hackettstown On July 1, 1854 Carteret became a borough within Bergen County when it was annexed by that county. On December 5, 1958 it became an independent municipality again when it merged with neighboring South Brunswick Township to form Borough Park District #1 (later organized into Borough Park District #2). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all land.
