In 1834, John Carteret and his family moved from New York to what is now Carteret Township in Middlesex County, New Jersey. They were the first European settlers in the township and soon became prominent in local politics. In 1839, Carteret was elected to the New Jersey Senate for District 3, which included parts of Middlesex and Union Counties. He served until 1845 when he resigned to run for governor of New Jersey as a Democrat. He lost but ran again three years later and won with 62% of the vote against Republican nominee George W. Smith. After serving as governor for two terms (1847-1851), he died at age 80 in Monmouth County on October 8, 1881. Carteret's service as an officer in the United States Military during the Mexican-American War made him one of America's most well-known advocates of military preparedness. As head of Militia Bureau No. 1 at Fort Snelling (now Minneapolis) during that conflict, he helped develop tactics used by American forces against Mexican forces occupying Minnesota. He then returned to America and began practice as a lawyer at Providence Plantation on Long Island Sound before moving westward to revolutionize legal procedures there under auspices of Connecticut Colony Legislature - activities that finally brought him into conflict with local governor Thomas Mifflin over land titles and other issues early in his career as attorney general (the office later became known as solicitor general).
