The first Europeans to explore and settle Carteret were Dutch traders and missionaries who landed there in 1624. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1664 when Captain John Smith and his men explored the area. In 1701, Colonel John Carteret founded what would become Carteret Township on land that he had purchased from the Native Americans. In 1837, Carteret became an incorporated town after being granted a charter by Governor James Buchanan. On November 6, 1837, it lost its charter due to financial troubles; however, it re-emerged as an unincorporated community on July 1 of that year with a new charter under which it remaining chartered as an open-air shopping center until 1959 when it became part of Hunterdon County proper. According to the 2010 Census, the township's population was 2,887; its racial makeup was 98% White (non-Hispanic), 1% Black or African American, 0% Native American/Alaskan Native; and 0% Asian or Pacific Islander

Carteret, New Jersey is located in the eastern United States and is a borough on the Delaware River. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Carteret was founded in 1788 by Nicholas-Jacques Carteret and was named for him. It incorporated as a borough in 1868. The name comes from Sir John Carteret who served as British ambassador to France from 1763 to 1767 and again from 1775 to 1785. In 1801, New Jersey granted carteret lands along its south bank for settlement by Europeans. The first settler arrived in 1802 and began construction of a house on what is now Meeting Street. By 1807, over 10 families had moved into the borough and it became one of the earliest towns in New Jersey. Carteret experienced some growth during the 19th century but declined during the 20th century due to several factors including loss of industry, decline of real estate values, and annexation by Philadelphia. However, recent resurgence has helped bring back much of Carteret's past glory including restoration of many historic buildings such as the Town Hall (1892), lighthouse (1927), post office (1929), courthouse (1983), ice cream parlor (2002), outdoor amphitheater (2008), public library (2010) and new park that opened in 2009 called Atlantic Avenue Park which includes a landfill filled with trees that once lined Atlantic Avenue
Carteret was founded in 1664 by John Carteret and his wife, Margarita. The town became a part of New Jersey in 1708.
