Despite these successes, however, Carteret would not remain immune to hardship throughout much of the twentieth century; several fires destroyed buildings in 1921-22 and 1929-30; floods hit the community twice (1948-49 and 1969), while other natural disasters such as earthquakes have also caused extensive damage hereabouts (e.g., 1974). Nevertheless, through perseverance and hard work even great challenges can be overcome—a lesson which is especially relevant today given carterets' status as an increasingly diverse center for economic development within New Jersey.
