Carteret is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 4,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Morristown Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Carteret comes from the Indian word "caroti," meaning "a piece of land in the shape of a cone." The first settler in Carteret was Nicholas de Carpentras, who arrived in 1664. He built a house on what is now First Street and named it Carpentersville after himself and his family. Other early settlers included Peter Prentice and Nicholas Biddle. In 1806, Jameson & Co., merchants, bought two lots on Third Street for $3 each from Ebenezer Cook. They erected their store there and called it Cookstown. In 1813, they sold their land to John Dickinson for $10 per acre ($2 per square foot). This transaction set off a period of rapid growth for Carteret; by 1830, it had reached its present size with 10 buildings and a population of 350 people (including 150 slaves). The area around today's Main Street began as numerous scattered farms that were platted between 1796-1815 by Dutch colonists under an ordinance issued by Governor Jameson. These farms became known as Hempstead Township during this time period because of the high concentration of hemp production near where roads leading to Philadelphia then crossed through farmland that formed much of Northern Hunterdon County (now Morris County). In 1832 when Hunterdon County was created from parts of Morris and Burlington Counties, Hempstead Township changed its name to Carteret Township because it lay within that new county boundaries. From 1832 until 1863 when Hunterdon County again split into two parts due to political turmoil following the War Between the States (the eastern half becoming Unionism while the western half became Confederate territory), Carteret resided within Unionist portions of Hunterdon COUNTY while living under Republican rule within Morris COUNTY.. After 1863 when Union forces invadedMorrisville during the American Civil War (in order to protect those loyal to President Abraham Lincoln)and carteret voted not to secede from NJ due to lack thereof support - cartaret reverted back into Republican control until well after Reconstruction ended most seriously damaging 30 years worth economic developmentCarteret has been typical electioneering ground in recent gubernatorial contests with 3 term incumbent Chris Christie running unopposed ..... The name Carteret comes from John Carteret who was the first governor of the colony of Rhode Island and he helped found this area in 1664. The population of Carteret was just over 1000 people at the time it was incorporated as a township in 1874. The oldest building in Carteret is a lighthouse which was built in 1792. It has been used as a public school, fire station and now houses the library. There are also several churches including St. Augustine's Catholic Church which dates back to 1844 and replaced an earlier church that had been destroyed by fire. There are also some businesses such as Pizzeria Martini which opened in 1945 and closed in 1998. In 1986, there were two tornadoes that hit Carteret causing $100,000 worth of damage to homes and businesses.
The first Europeans to visit Carteret were the Portuguese in 1524. They named the island after a ship, the "Nossa Senhora da Ponte" which they captured while sailing from Brazil. In 1664, Dutch traders landed on the island and began trading with local natives. The English took over this trade in 1675 when they acquired control of New Netherland from France. The English built a military fort on the island in 1702 and used it as their main base for operations in New England. In 1778, Carteret was abandoned by its English occupants and became an uninhabited islet. It was annexed by Jersey in 1814 and remains part of that country to this day.
