Carteret is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden– borough of Camden. The first Europeans to visit what is now Carteret were Dutchmen on their ship "Vriesland" in 1614 and again in 1625. Carteret was founded by Sir George Carteret on the east side of Monmouth River between 1715 and 1720 as a small fishing village settlement that served as an important stopover on vessels travelling upriver to New York City from Trenton and Philadelphia. Sir George's son, Nicholas (1711-1768), had his plantation called Westmoreland located adjacent to what is now Carteret Village (now Old Bridge Township) on both sides of the river. With increased traffic along the route via highway 95, Westmoreland became too large for Nicholas to manage alone and he sold it in 1765 to John Randolph who renamed it Randolphstown after himself (John bequeathed it to his nephew). In 1800, Randolph moved his family from Princeton into Randolphstown which he built into one of Morris County's most prestigious homes – Lady Randolph House – still standing today within its original parameters including its elegant gardens (). In 1832, when Morris County was formed from parts of Middlesex and Mercer counties, Carteret became one of its six townships withinMonmouth County. By 1840, however, following the opening of Interstate 95 through Monmouth County – making it much easier for people to get around – carteret's importance faded somewhat as its residents increasingly commute to metropolitan areas such as Camden or Atlantic City.. Nevertheless, during World War II many local members served in the armed forces; many were killed in action or returned home with post-traumatic stress disorder (. During that time much progress was made regarding public education; starting with a schoolhouse built in 1834 that soon became known as Monroe School). Afterward there were several attempts at reviving interest in community life culminating with incorporation as a city by referendum on November 3rd 1974 led by Mayor Joseph Jaffe who stated: “There are other places where our citizens can go where they can enjoy better qualityof life without sacrificing their own way of life here” (). However this effort failed due largelyto lack support from elected officials combined with animosity towards cityhood among some residents who felt they had been abandoned () . In recent years there have been efforts spearheaded by Mayor Jaffe and othersto revive aspects of traditional carteretschools (), green space (), arts & crafts festivals (), special events () etc.; but these have not always borne fruit ().

Carteret was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1846, from portions of Northampton Township. The earliest known European settlement in what is now Carteret took place in 1684 when James Carteret and his family traveled from Rhode Island to find land in what is now Middlesex County and purchased 10 acres (4 ha) from Abraham Cogan. In 1722-24 Captain John Smith of Plymouth Colony established a trading post here under the name "New Providence" after reaching this site on October 20, 1722 by sailing downriver from Portsmouth Harbor with five ships under Captains Isaac Watts and Nicholas Denison. A post office called "Carteret" was established in 1836, but it became inactive by 1840. The first settler to purchase property here was George Biddle who had bought 1/2 mile (0.8 km) east of where present-day Third Street meets Market Street on July 12, 1837; he named the tract "Biddle's Land." A year later he sold it to Benjamin Fenton for $1 per acre (0.48 ha). The first home built here was erected by Fenton on December 10th of that year; it still stands today – opposite Third Street between Market and Rector Streets – as known as the Fenton House or simply "Fenton's". The Borough of Carteret annexed parts of Northampton Township on March 15th 1912 following a referendum vote taken pursuant to an act entitled "An Act to annex certain lands comprising part of Northampton Township", approved February 2nd 1911 by the New Jersey Legislature via special resolution #2272 filed with Secretary of State Emanuel Cappello On November 6th 1915 residents voted 3-to-1 in favor thereof over an alternative proposal providing for annexation which would have resulted if no referendum had been held because its passage would have set off another referendum for annexation within one year’s time based upon certain zoning changes proposed therein which were not accepted thereby including reduction or elimination of all industrial districts within township limits while maintaining other commercial districts therein also reducing size and number thereof without corresponding increase in population density thereupon resulting instead only increased rates charged thereto thereby defeating any real purpose intended thereby notwithstanding efforts made thereafter through various communication channels duly notice given thereto includingadvertisement published therein throughout Bucks County “For Annexation Please Vote” but no answer ever came thence save when finally advertised again herein six weeks later bearing date October 25th 1916 having then failed actually to materialize evidently because lack whatever local support may have been available eventually manifested itself thru effective opposition therefrom resulting ultimatelyin actual annexation only days before final vote being taken actually due primarily to presence at recent election headquarters immediately adjacent theretoof well financed yet unorganized group representing little more than twenty families organized ostensibly around one individual well known locally both politically & ideologically opposed theretoself carrying complete control thereof despite earlier attempts made thereunder notwithstanding
