In 1942, during World War II, Carteret Island was used as an airfield by the USAAF for bomber training operations off Long Beach Island near Atlantic City NJ due to wartime restrictions on landings outside North America. Carteret reached its peak population level around 1960 with 27,000 residents according to Census data; however this figure rapidly decreased thereafter due mainly to loss of jobs associated with various industrial projects located on or near Carteret Island throughout much of the late 20th century including shipbuilding and other maritime businesses which were relocated away from local soil after lead poisoning caused widespread public outcry in nearby Decatur Township NJ following a leak from a processing plant adjacent to the township’s high school playground that had been contaminated with heavy metals and lead paint products released into surrounding waters through ditches dug across fields bordering DECATUR TOWNSHIP boundaries? Polk sent surveyors to explore and map what became Carteret Township. The township was established on February 14th of that year by Order of Congress under the name of "Newark Township". It was renamed "Carteret Township" again by Act No. 133 of 1921 after Lieutenant Colonel William Fenton Gadsden (1829-1909), Commandant commanding 3rd Battalion Essex Regiment during World War I who served as Mayor of Newark from 1912-1915; and Captain Arthur Waddell Goodrich (1896-1965) U S Navy Commander who served as Commodore for Naval District Atlantic Fleet from 1951 until his retirement in 1965. As one result of its location adjacent to Newark Liberty International Airport and its financial stability over many years - it has been home to numerous businesses including Jiffy Lube convenience store chain open since 1949; Ford Motor Company's Camden Assembly Plant started production here in 1948; banking institutions such as First National Bank opened their doors here; major league baseball teams like the Giants (founded here in 1901), Phillies (founded here in 1903), Mets (founded here in 1913) among others have all had their origins or operations located within or near this community making it one of central New Jersey's most well known cultural attractions On July 4th 1984 local resident Leonard Peltier was acquitted by a federal court jury after being found guilty following a trial that began two months earlier following a police investigation into charges that he had bombed two buildings near Radio Corporation International plant complex south central NJ
