Carteret, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hunterdon County and part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in Carteret were French Huguenots who arrived in 1714. In 1777, when America became a country, Carteret became part of the Province of Pennsylvania. After the American Revolution, it remained part of New Jersey until 1801, when it became a separate township in Hunterdon County. During its early years as a township, Carteret was known for its fertile land and rich phosphate resources which made it an attractive place to live and raise crops. However, this prosperity did not last long because by 1825 Carteret had lost much of its phosphate production to development on the neighboring farms within minutes' walk of its citizens'. In 1829–1830 Congress passed an act providing for division of Hunterdon County into two counties: one for Johnson and another for Monmouthshire (now Ocean). As a result of this change in government structure carterets residents voted to secede from Monmouthshire and form their own township called Carteret on March 3rd 1830 although they still counted as part of Johnson Parish. When Morristown Township was established in 1865 following the merger of three other townships including Carteret-on-Hudson with Morristown Township (then called Northumberland), many residents fromCarteret left to join Morristown during that time period as well since there was no intention to keep both places together any longer than necessary due to different demographics and economies.
