On July 24, 1826, a group of men in Carteret set out to shoot a black man. One man was shot and killed, two were wounded, and one was able to escape. The shooting continued as the men raced towards the black man. One white man ran into a home and began firing at the fleeing men. He was killed by one of the men who had run into the home.
carteret is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Hunterdon County and the county's largest municipality by land area. The first European settlers of Carteret were Dutch/Dutch-Portuguese colonists who began arriving in 1664. They named their new community after Maurice de Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret (1580–1641), an English colonel and soldier who had served with distinction in the Dutch War of Independence (1648–53). On November 15, 1786, Captain John Smith discovered and mapped what is today Newark Bay Area during his explorations as part of his mapping expedition for General George Washington's transcontinental road network. This discovery led to increased development around what is now Newark Terminal Station because it would be possible to connect those new roads with Philadelphia via sea rather than traveling overland. On October 14, 1859, Jonas Ewing bought 640 acres (227 hectares) east of present-dayCarteret from Nicholas Sparks for $6 million dollars ($ as of 2019). This purchase created Municipal Borough Ofcarteret which was incorporated as a township on March 9th 1860 with a population of 707 residents. In 1876 Municipal Borough Ofcarteret merged into newly formed Hunterdon County when it was divided between two townships - much like our current form - due to its size and importance within the county as well as its location within central NJ

The name of the borough comes from John Carteret, 1st Baron Grantham and his wife Elizabeth Frye who founded the Borough in 1798. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Carteret were Dutch settlers in 1624. A grant of land to John Carteret in 1675 included what is now Carteret Island. In 1798, John Carteret donated 6 acres (2 hectares) of land to the Borough for its development as a town. In 1814, during the War of 1812, British forces burned down part of Fort Jameson which led to an increased demand for wood by the Royal Navy and local farmers. As a result of this demand, private property began to be developed for timber and other purposes soon aftercarteret became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1815 with boundaries that include present-day Harrison Township and much of Morris County including Starledown Township and Belleville Township eastward until they were annexed into Passaic on April 7th 1868. The population reached 5,000 by 1840 but decreased slowly over time due to several factors such as prohibitionism and industrialization throughout most of America during this time period; however it did experience some growth starting around 1900 when steamboats started arriving at Landing Place dockyard located near today's Harrison Boulevard/Route 9 intersection which madeCarteret an important commercial center for bothPassaic County and Bergen County
