In 1714 Samuel Ogden called the land around what is now Carteret "New Brunswick." In 1739 George Washington's forces invaded New Jersey from Staten Island during the American Revolutionary War and burned many homes along Route 70 near where present day Carteret stands. A smallpox epidemic began in 1828 which killed more than one hundred people in what is now Carteret. The disease was eventually eradicated from America by vaccination programs run by President Woodrow Wilson's administration as a result of his efforts to promote public health through education Programs such as National School Health Corps (1912-1923), Pure Food Act of 1906 (16 U.S.), and Meat Inspection Act of 1938 (7 U.S.). It was also through these same programs that modern medical care became available for many residents of Carteret who would have otherwise not had access to it or could not afford it at that time. One local resident, Mrs. Grace Gregg Peele had an operation on her eye which required use of forceps due to early morningstarvation while living off the grid with few other means for providing basic medical attention for herself and her family during those difficult times; however this type of surgery was then only available at great expense on Long Island/Island Heights because there were no hospitals close by then! carteret townsquare shopping center
