The first guns in Carteret were pistols, which were used by the military for hunting and self-defense. In 1786, a rifle was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and named after him, the Nicholas-Jacques Rifle. The first gun company in Carteret was founded in 1789 by Captain John Fenton and his brother Captain Nathaniel Fenton. The company made pistols and rifles until 1824. In 1825, a store called "The Arsenal" was established on Market Street in Carteret by John Fenton Jr., one of Captain Nathaniel's sons. In 1829,Captain John Fenton III died suddenly at the age of 69 years old while on vacation in Europe. His son John Fenton IV inherited the business and it continued under his father's name until 1860 when it became known as "Pistol & Rifle Company". In 1862,the company moved to its present location on Main Street in Carteret where it still operates today. In 1870, two brothers named Daniel Webster bought the business from their father with intentions of continuing production under their own names but this did not happen due to differences between them over prices and distribution methods. From 1870 to 1888 there were ten different owners of the company before it passed into trust ownership finally being taken over by George Wirtzkowski who ran it as a privately owned concern from 1889 to 1922 before becoming manager of American Arms Manufacturing Co., later renamed Colt Firearms Corporation. During World War II American Arms Manufacturing Co turned out 5 million rounds of ammunition for US military use alone making it one of the largest producers in America during that time period
