The first settler here was Capt Elisha Sprague who built a tavern on what is now State Road 9 in 1770/71; it became known as Sprague's Tavern because George Washington stopped there for refreshment on his way back down the river after Battle of Princeton ( February 3, 1777). In 1834 William Pope purchased 640 acres comprising present-day Carteret from Lord Dunmore for $2,000 cash which he donated to be used for agricultural purposes only. This farmstead still stands today and forms part of Pope's Farm Museum complex adjacent to Interstate 80 Exit 158A near milepost 339 (Route 9&9A) off exit 168A). In 1835 James Auld began cultivating 500 acres with Wm Pope’s help – still extant today – becoming one of just six farmers in township who produced acreage commercially during that time period.. In 1836 Michael Hogan also began cultivating 500 acres with Wm Pope’s help but this particular parcel remained unsold until 1861 when it too came into ownership by Mr Hogan’s grandson Fenton Cavanaugh Jr who continued farming there until 1984 when it passed through family hands once again becoming part of carteretshaganews@yahoomail.com website local history library
In 1765, John Carteret, a Quaker and member of the Board of Trade in New York City, purchased land on the Jersey Shore. He built a home there and named it "Carteret Island". In 1777, he was elected to the Continental Congress as a delegate from New Jersey. The following year, he negotiated an agreement with Great Britain that ceded sections of Long Branch Township (now part of Monmouth County), NJ to British Columbia.
