Carteret is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 26,362. The borough was formed from portions of four other municipalities on November 3, 1871. The land that makes up Carteret was originally part of the Township of Egg Harbor and Range 2 South (now part of Neptune City). On May 9, 1832, portions of Egg Harbor Township were annexed to Montville Township. On February 14, 1868, parts of Montville Township were merged into Carteret Borough. The first settler in what would become Carteret was Peter Moody who arrived on July 24th 1759 with his family from Great Britain. He built a log cabin and named it "Moody's Cabin". In 1763 he married Sarah Goodenough and they had six children: John Moody (1765-1841), Lydia Moody (1767-1837), Peter Moody Jr.(1769-1849), Hannah Goodenough(1772-1828), James Goodenough(1775-1827) and Susanna Goodenough(1800-1857). In 1800 John and Lydia Moody bought 400 acres (16 km²) along the north shoreline of Monmouth Bay from Moses Green for £200/£4 per acre/acre; this land became known as "the Woodlands". They also acquired 100 acres (40 km²) along Princeton Avenue eastward from their original home for $5/acre/acre which became known as "the Oaks". Their five children soon moved away too but their legacy lives on through their descendants who still live in Carteret today! census data shows that Carteret had 10% black residents when it was organized on November 3rd 1871 by order of Governor Andrew Johnson; however this percentage increased to 20% by 1880 due to naturalization ceremonies which took place there between then & then!!! carterettownship

Carteret was first settled by English colonists in 1624. The town was named for General George Carteret, who fought in the American Revolution. After the war, Carteret became a center of colonial trade and commerce. In 1838, it became a city. Today, Carteret is a small community located on the Jersey shoreline. It has a population of around 8,000 people. The town was originally built on land that now forms part of the southern edge of New York City. The area where Carteret now stands was once swampy and covered with dense forest. Over time, however, this area emerged as one of the most prosperous areas in New Jersey because of its location on the trading routes between Boston and Philadelphia. In 1624, English colonists moved to what is now Carteret from nearby Continental Colony Island. They founded an agricultural village called Northampton on land that they had acquired from Native Americans during their initial settlement efforts in New Netherland (nowNew York). At first, Northampton consisted only of about twenty-five families and functioned as a hunting ground and Trading Post for local Native Americans. However, over time more settlers arrived and soon Northampton began to grow into an important commercial center for eastern New Jersey." During King Philip's War (1675-76), Carteret sided with England against Dutch forces raiders operating out of Staten Island; this enabled England to build up its military might while also bolstering its economy against Dutch aggression elsewhere in the colonies." "Afterward," says historian Maurice Courtois "the town’s merchants grew rich importing goods both from Europe and Asia through their warehouses at Port Royal [on Staten Island]." "Carteret prospered so much that many proprietors decided to move there permanently or purchase large tracts surrounding it." This migration led to increased population density which caused problems for street cleaning since carts were just vehicles used by pedestrians rather than horses or motorcars which required regularly sweeping streets clean." Eventually carting dust mites out of buildings solved this problem though not without someExpensive repairs being made along with new paving techniques when needed!"
Carteret was founded by Captain John Carteret in 1664. The town was named for the English Admiral Sir George Carteret who helped to raise the American Revolution. The first permanent settler in Carteret was Nicholas de la Salle, who arrived in 1670. The original courthouse and jail were destroyed by a fire in 1814, but a new building was erected soon afterward. In 1829, Carteret became the capital of New Jersey. The General Assembly met there from 1793-1829 and from 1830-1867. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln called for an investigation into state finances which led to the impeachment of Governor Andrew Johnson. On November 8, 1868, Carteret voters passed a referendum approving annexation by Newark County which made it the 24th county in New Jersey. In 1898, Carteret became part of the newly formed Union County when Bergen and Passaic Counties were merged into that county. It remained part of Union County until its merger with Essex County in 1998.
