Carteret is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,044 at the 2010 census. It was formed from the merger of Carteret Township and portions of Ridgefield Township on December 15, 1874. The town of Carteret grew up around the now-demolished Peddle Wharf factory on the southeastern tip of Carteret Island. The wharf served as a landing ground for fishing vessels and shipping during the early days of Carteret Island development. In 1814, while fighting with British forces in Pennsylvania, Commodore John Smith met General George Washington off Long Island in what is now Camden County. Smith recommended that then-Governor Nicholas Easton place Morristown within Camden County for military purposes because it would be easier for soldiers to march to Manhattan without having to cross through Philadelphia or Trenton.
