Cartaeret is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Carteret is located on the south shore of Lake Monmouth. The first settlers in what is now Carteret were fishermen who came to the area around 1795. In 1824, Samuel Weller patented 640 acres (249 hectares) of land which became known as Weller's Patent. He and his wife Elizabeth had five children: Samuel Weller II (1825-1892), Isaac Weller (1827-1900), John Fenton Weller (1830-1912), and Abby Jane Weller (1833-1920). They raised chickens and pigs on their land until 1856 when they bought more property which included present day Carteret from Jabez Woodruff for $5 per acre ($/km²). The original grantees of the land included six other families: Alpheus de la Vega (1768-1849), Nicholas de Vinci (1774-1846), George Washington Bridge Company Commissioners James McNeely and Edward Kelley(1785?– 1847), Capt. David Vail(1800?–1867), Abraham Weisel(1800?–1864) All of whom resided within well defined limits formed by Creek Run and Piscataway River with access by ferry across creek to ocean; boundaries then unchanged for over one hundred years! Mrs. Weisel's descendants still own much of this today including house #1 on Ferry Road near where US Route 9 crosses creek two miles east of downtownCarteret also claim some unincorporated part or all of what is now Maplewood Township including a small section west of Main Street between Deerfield Avenue and Beach Boulevard; these claims are not recognized by carterettes authorities though map evidence suggests they may be true

Carteret is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,921 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded mention of Carteret was in 1190 when it was spelled Carretert. The name comes from the French "carrefour" meaning six crossings or fordings. One source suggests that the name may have originated as a result of its location at what is now called "Carrefour Point". The fording point lay just south of present-day Carteret Island on which early cartographers had placed it because of its strategic position between Passaic and Bergen Rivers. In 1714, Nicholas Carteret, one of the proprietors of Northampton Township in Mercer County, built an estate on what is now known as Carrefour Point Road (now called Carteret Boulevard). He named it after his father-in-law and namesake Nicholas de la Tour who had also founded Northampton Township in 1689. In 1812, James Fenton acquired land adjacent to Carteret's estate and set up a farm there which he continued to operate until his death in 1846. His heirs sold most of their holdings to John Prentice in 1865; however some portions were retained by JFenton's grandson George Tilton Prentice until his death in 1927. The first post office at Carteret was established on November 5, 1822 with John Morse as its first owner/operator. It closed on December 12th due to lack of customers and reopened on January 9th under the new name "Easton". After several years under various names including "Westminster", "Newark", and finally "Carteret", it reverted back to its original name on July 7th, 1838 following the creation of Hunterdon County by act passed by Congress as part of the Compromise Of 1850 during Reconstructionism preceding American Civil War II.
