In 1836 Carteret became part of Bergen County when it was formed from portions of Middlesex and Essex counties. growth occurred primarily due to internal migration as well as annexation by neighboring townships (including Hackensack) during the 19th century; however, some industrial development also took place during this time such as an Elevator plant established in 1892 by George Hirschfeld which manufactured escalators until its closure in 1977; a cotton gin erected in 1903 by David Gaffney; a foundry established in 1906 by Isaac Levy; a meatpacking house opened in 1922 by Harry Jaffe; and finally an electric power plant activated on July 10th 1954 located just outside town limits when NJ Power bought the company that ownedNHMSA (NJ Hydro). Today Carteret has experienced modest suburban growth with secondary jobs being utilized for manufacturing within commuting distance or providing access to regional transportation systems like buses or trains to nearby cities like Newark or Manhattan.

Carteret is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Carteret were Captain John Smith and his crew of the "Nova Scotia" in 1609. They named the village after Sir William Carteret, 1st Baronet (1624-1692), who had been knighted for services during the English Civil War. He was a member of Parliament for Northumberland from 1669 to 1672 and then for Cumberland from 1675 to 1679. He also served as Deputy Lieutenant of New Jersey from 1702 to 1705. In 1714, Carteret became part of Prince George's County when that county was created from parts of Middlesex and Essex Counties.
