There are several sources that claim Carteret was founded by a group of Dutch colonists in 1624. The earliest reference to the town is from a deed from Nicholas Minuit, an investor in the colony, and his wife, Marie de la Garde. The document mentions "a place called Carteret" but does not give any further information. In 1702, the Town of Carteret was chartered by Governor Richard Howe. In 1756,Carteret became part of the Province of New Jersey. In 1845, Carteret incorporated as a village under the name of Bellefontaine-Carteret. On July 1, 1846, Bellefontaine-Carteret merged with nearby Gloucester Township to form what is now Carteret Township. The first post office for Carteret was established on November 5, 1827. The first settler in what would become Carteret was John Atwood who arrived in 1798. He ranched land and built a log cabin which he named Atwood's Cabin. One source claims that David Lane purchased Atwood's Cabin from John Atwood in 1800 and renamed it Old Log Cabin because it had been abandoned for many years before that time; however this story has been debunked as false by historians along with other legends about early carterets such as Jameson House which still stands today within town limits and is said to be haunted! A second account suggests that Minor Hennepin may have bought atwood's cabin in 1800 or 1801 though there is no record to support this assertion either way; however Hennepin did own land adjacent to where Old Log Cabin later stood so it seems more likely he simply moved into Ito’s Tavern which still stands within town limits today (though some say its ghostly activity dates back even earlier!). Ito’s Tavern served as both a stop on the Underground Railroad and also served as one of the few places locals could buy alcohol without getting raided!( another legend associated with this spot says someone hung their coat up inside!) Ito’s Tavern remains much like it did when Minor Hennepin owned it - centuries later you can still find staff working behind the bar still!
Carteret is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Carteret was on what is now the east side of Willow Road (Route 206), about 2 miles north of present-day Carteret. John Carteret and his family arrived there on October 8, 1664 from Providence Plantation in Rhode Island after traveling for many weeks by boat. Hereditary lumbering mammals such as mammoths and mastodons had quadruped-like bodies that could barely support themselves on their four limbs, let alone walk or run. By about 420 AD, however, man had evolved into a biped who could stand and carry his own weight like any other mammal by using his arms and legs as well as his hands and feet. This shift from a sloth-like state to a fully capable human was due to the development of agriculture which allowed for better food storage and distribution systems than earlier methods of subsistence raiding and scavenging. Agriculture also led to the rise of civilizations such as China, India, Greece, Rome and Egypt which developed elaborate architecture, artistry and writing that displayed many signs of advanced civilization when compared to their Stone Age predecessors. Eventually man’s ability to walk upright resulted in his becoming an apex predator which eliminated most major animal predators from existence leaving us with our current environment where we can enjoy all sorts of plants, animals and bugs without fear of them coming after us again!

Carteret was an early Dutch settlement on the Jersey Shore, located in what is now Carteret Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. It was established by Lieutenant Colonel Cornelius Van der Sarck and his brother-in-law Hendrick de Vries in 1666 as a small trading post on the Delaware River. The two brothers later built a larger Fort Carteret at the mouth of Hackensack Creek to serve as their base of operations. The first inhabitants of Carteret were three families from Holland who arrived here in 1668: the Janssens, the Bruins, and de Vries himself. The group's original home was a log cabin near present-day Brick Church Road and Northumberland Avenue. By 1672, Carteret had become an important stop for goods traveling between New York City and Philadelphia via the Delaware River Valley. In 1702, Captain John Smith discovered species of natives living along both sides of the river near modern day Pennsauken Beach. The Indians called this area "Wakanunga" or "Bayou nanawinga." carteiret was derived from this Indian name which means "place where there is plenty of fish." In 1709, General George Washington founded Mount Vernon as his presidential fortress on Staten Island after storming and capturing it during his epic expedition against British forces at Trenton (New Jersey). At that time Carteret became known as "Mount Vernon Heights." During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed at nearby amphibious landing sites on Long Island Sound including Fort Roosevelt (now Governors Island) and Battalion Barracks #2 on Governors Bayou just south of current day Bayonne Borough Park in Camden County NJ. For more than a year starting late 1942 until early 1943 these troops camped aboard ships moored at Fortress Monroe while they awaited shipping back to America. Many locals remember seeing long lines outside local stores waiting to buy chocolate bars or cigarettes when units disembarked for work assignments ashore. These troops also benefited from generous Quantico National Laboratory rations which arrived daily on board ship. postwar development included increasing numbers of residents moving into town beginning in earnest during World War II; this included among others Artie Fenton who opened one of first convenience stores in town c1974
