Carteret is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Asbury Park-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in Carteret was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1614 and it was granted by King Philip IV of Spain to John carter who named it after his father and cartographer Matthew Carteret. The town began as a farming community with three farms: Cedar Hill (now an abandoned home), Green Gables (now a private residence) and White Sands (now a park). In 1835, Samuel Morse established the telegraph line between Trenton and Philadelphia which led to the growth of Carteret as a center for communication. The post office was founded in 1836 and became known as "Morseville". In 1863, during the American Civil War, General George Biddle ordered all roads within New Jersey closed so that troops could move through on horseback. One result of this order was that transportation became essential for soldiers moving from one battlefield to another. As a result, many businesses were destroyed or moved away due to destruction or lack of available transportation. The First Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1892 by Reverend Crampton Channing and dedicated on December 20th. From its inception until its demolition in 1951 it served as both church and school for students living around the area then called "the Village." This unusual building still stands today on Main Street adjacent to Immanuel Lutheran Church off Willow Avenue across from Haddonfield High School located just east of Center Road inside what is now Borough Park Elementary School complex off westbound I-95 South exit ramp near Huntingdon Valley Mall

Carteret was a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark metropolitan area. Carteret was created on March 9, 1871, from parts of Atlantic City and South Brunswick Township. The first settler in Carteret was Isaac Barrett who came to the area around 1825. The town's name comes from George Carteret who served as lieutenant colonel in the American Revolution and then became Commodore of the Port Royal Navy station on Long Island (now Staten Island). In 1827, he donated land to form what would become Carteret Borough. The original courthouse stood on what is now Market Street. In 1870, Carteret Borough became a city with its own government and court system. That year also saw the opening of Atlantic City's first brewery - The Lighthouse Brewery - which helped lead to increased tourism for both towns. In 1903, when Monmouth County Agricultural Society acquired some land east of where present-day Edison Boulevard meets Route 23 in South Brunswick Township for a new agricultural center known as "The Belt", it allowed for additional development within Carteret boundaries including brickyards and an auto dealership by developer James Fenton Jr.. By 1920 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Carteret employing 1,500 people; it had become one of Monmouth County's most vibrant communities despite being relatively small by modern standards. During World War II many residents chose not to fight because they felt that war would only benefit Germany while their loved ones fought overseas; however many did serve and made significant contributions such as creating Newark Airport or working on developing weapons systems during wartime America's participation in World War II
The town of Carteret, New Jersey was founded in 1795 by Captain John Carteret. The town became a part of the United States of America in 1797.
