Carteret is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,663 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlantic City metropolitan area. The first settler in Carteret was Nicholas Martino, who arrived on July 5, 1678. In 1718, Increase Mariotti founded the village of Marsico on what is now Montclair Avenue and State Highway 8. On November 3 of that year, Mariotti sold his land to John Hughes for £200 sterling. Hughes built a mill there in 1784 which became known as "Hughes Mill". In 1812, James Carteret and his brothers Nathaniel and Nicholas bought 2/3 of the lot from Hughes for $2 per acre (thetown had no landowning families then). James ran a ferry across Delaware Bay until he died in 1876; his brother Nathaniel continued to operate it until 1885. However, by this time carteret had become an agricultural township with many small farms dotting its landscape: some still remain today. During World War II much of Carteret was destroyed by aerial bombing during the Essex County Air Raids conducted by the United States Army's Eighth Air Force; however most of it has since been rebuilt and remains a steady community anchor around which other businesses sprout up along Route 30A (formerly Newtown Road). On October 26th 1908 Dr. Atherton Jepson purchased 1/4 mile (1 kilometer) east of present-day Main Street from Elias Wiseman for $125 cash plus expenses associated with moving furniture from Wiseman's old home on that road to new quarters near First Baptist Church (later Congregational) on Main Street – this purchase marked Jepson's first commercial enterprise outside Philadelphia or Boston proper – though it would be years before he developed any significant medical or scientific activities hereabouts [note: Wiseman did not actually live in Carteret but resided about two miles northeast on Plainfield Road]. Carteret, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,401 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Delaware River on the border of Princeton and Morristown. The name Carteret comes from John Carteret, 1st Baron Grantham who served as the Governor of New York during the American Revolution. The first Europeans to visit Carteret were Dutch traders in 1624-25. George Washington visited Carteret in 1777 while surveyor general of Pennsylvania and ordered Major General Edward Braddock's force to retreat after being defeated by British forces near Trenton overrunning that state's borders with Pennsylvania and Delaware. The first settler in Carteret Township was Abram Woolridge on March 9, 1795. He built a cabin on what is now known as Woolridge Road which became part of Princeton Township on February 14, 1814. It was later renamed for George Washington Carver who helped build much of Interstate 95 between Newark and Philadelphia. In 1847 Elisha Gray organized a Methodist church at what is now Park Avenue and Cassell Street in what would become Princeton Borough; it met there until 1865 when it moved to its present location across from Central High School where it remains today. In 1892 Isaac Newton Smith founded an agricultural cooperative called "Newton's Hole" which still operates today as an agricultural marketing cooperative; it contributed $5 million towards the founding of Rutgers University in 1905 more than any other township or borough in New Jersey that year alone. 2nd Lieutenant James Caldwell took command of Company K (1st Battalion) 2nd US Infantry Regiment during World War I; he had been recommended by General John J Pershing carteret history
