The town was named after General Robert Ewing Lewis who fought for independence during the American Revolution. After being burned by British troops during the Battle of Princeton on October 12, 1847—the last fight on American soil between Britain and its colonies—Lewisburgh became part of Kensington Township which was created from parts of Mercer and Middlesex counties east of Princeton. During World War II, many factories were built in or around Camden including Allied Signal and RCA Radio Corporation which are still extant today as well as numerous other businesses that contributed to its growth. Camden, New Jersey is a city in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Camden County. The first settlers to what would become Camden were Dutch families who arrived in 1664 as part of the Moravian Mission settlements in New Netherland. In 1714, they founded a town called Hatfield on the southern border of what is now Camden County. The town was destroyed by British forces during the American Revolution and never rebuilt. In 1775, General George Washington's army evacuated Philadelphia ahead of the Battle of Princeton and destroyed all evidence that Hessians had ever been present in that city—a event which has been erroneously described as "the Destruction of Philadelphia." This left Hatfield with fewer citizens to support Washington's cause and he abandoned it two days later. The township was formed from parts of Mercer Township and Northampton Township on March 1, 1825; it became an incorporated borough on November 3, 1867. The first European to settle in Camden was Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French nobleman who arrived in 1664. He built the first permanent home in what is now Camden, and named it "Newport." The town rapidly grew during the 18th century, thanks to its strategic location at the mouth of the Delaware River and its access to markets in Philadelphia and New York City. In 1784, Camden became a separate county within New Jersey. During the American Revolution, Camden was one of the most active locales on both sides of the conflict. It played an important role as a port for shipping goods north and south along the Delaware River and as a center for recruitment for the army. After independence was achieved, however, Camden's fortunes began to decline. A series of epidemics struck Great Britain during the early 19th century, causing many British immigrants to move away from Camden. In 1836, however, when New Jersey became independent from Great Britain, Camden reemerged as one of its most vibrant cities. By 1860, it had reached its peak as an economic center with significant manufacturing output and population growth. However, by 1930s Camden's economy had completely collapsed due to waves of immigration and industrialization across much of southern New Jersey.
