On July 1 of that year, all but 3 outlying areas within the City limits were annexed by Philadelphia to form a new metropolitan area known as "Philadelphia-Camden". The history and growth of Camden are intimately intertwined with that of Philadelphia itself; both were founded in what is now southeastern Pennsylvania in 1685 as proprietary townships under British rule. Their proximity made them key stops on early America's road network - traffic between these two cities grew rapidly during the eighteenth century due to their mutual trade interests - and they continue to be important today: according to 2011 Census estimates, nearly 30% (27%)of Philadelphia resident jobs are located in or near Camden! Aspects of this relationship include shared culture and history (e.g., both cities' official nicknames are "The Hub" because they once served as one major shipping point for goods arriving from points east), dating back to when both were part of one large colonial empire; and even basic services like water service have been shared since before each city's establishment!
