Many famous soldiers were born or raised in Camden such as Joseph Pulitzer, Captain John J. Pershing and General Dwight D Eisenhower. In 1951, when New Jersey became a republic, it lost its status as a U.S., borough and accordingly began to lose some of its financial benefits that had been given to it by America’s biggest economy at that time (New York City). However, despite these setbacks, Camden has continued to experience significant growth throughout the last few decades thanks in large part to its strong community spirit and dedication to public service
Camden is a city in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 56,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in New Jersey after Newark and the seventh most populous city in America. It is also one of the nine municipalities located within Camden County. The earliest known inhabitants of Camden were Native Americans who may have come from nearby areas such as Monmouth and Neptune Counties. English colonists arrived in 1664 to found Fort Cumberland on the southern border of Camden Township. In 1727, they founded what would become Perth Amboy on the opposite side ofriver from where Camden now stands. The town's name derived from an early settler, John Camden, Jr., whose family had owned land in Perth Amboy since at least 1692. In 1838, Philadelphia businessman Anthony Morris built a toll bridge overthe Delaware River between Camden and Philadelphia with money he had loaned to his friend George Washington during the American Revolution. Morris named it for himself – "John Morris Bridge". When Princeton University moved to Princeton Junction (now part of hooker Road) in 1849, Morrissbridge became their new campus there; this area now includes parts of both downtowns of Trenton and Princeton Junction

In 1978, Camden merged with other municipalities to form New Jersey City which still governs the area today except for some portions that are now part of Lindenwood Township.
