Camden, New Jersey is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,539 at the 2010 Census. It was formed on April 1, 1909 from parts of South Camden and East Camden. The name derives from the Old English word cambrens meaning "a large blackberry tree". The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Camden were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. In 1814, when the Americans acquired much of British North America, they chose to establish themselves as a separate county within New Jersey instead of annexing it into Pennsylvania as had been planned by their British counterparts. This choice led to much tension between American and British settlers in the area and helped spur development around what would eventually become Camden Township. In 1898, Edward M. Brooke became mayor of Camden after winning a close race against incumbent John Fenton Jr.. His tenure saw rapid growth in downtown business and culture; many local landmarks – such as Pemberton Square and the old City Hall – were built during this time including Brookes Cafe on State Street which still stands today. Despite some challenges (such as tax hikes) he managed to keep Camden afloat during difficult times for the city throughout his term; one such event was when he successfully pushed through plans for a new high school that would have increased access for poorer residents of South Camden. During World War II most of central Camden was destroyed bybombing with incendiary munitions dropped by USAAF bombers over Atlantic City on October 14th 1944- 15th 1945 leaving an eerie crater about 110 feet wide at Broad and Market Streets called "the Bombing Alley". As part of post-war reconstruction efforts, many businesses closed but others like Joe's Pizza reopened or renovated while claims continue to be made that some properties actually went bankrupt because they could not compete with newly opened stores near Central Parkade/ Penn Station-. Today many people unfamiliar with its past may mistakenly call Camden "the Bombing Alley" without fully understanding its importance in post-war history!
