Camden, New Jersey is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 28,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Riverside metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Camden were Dutch farmers and traders who founded a small community on the east bank of the Delaware River in 1676. They named their settlement "Brielle" after William Brielle, an early settler and professor of navigation at Princeton University. In 1714, British colonists established trading posts along the eastern seaboard and named these sites including Camden after themselves: Cape May (later Monmouth), Cumberland (now Mercer), Gloucester (now Burlington County), and Northampton (now Bucks). In 1781, when Pennsylvania became a United States territory, it absorbed Camden into Philadelphia; however, because Camden was outside of Philadelphia's boundaries until 1871 – when it became part of the new city – it retains its Dutch name as well as its history as one of America's mostorigin-rich cities. In 1824, John Pemberton built what is now known as Pemberton Hall on land he had bought from Nicholas Lowery for £2 per acre ($ 27 per km²). This large brick home still stands today and has been used by many local dignitaries over the years including mayors Tom Murphy and Cory Booker Jr., governors Christine Todd Whitman and Chris Christie, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton testify before Congresswoman Steny Hoyer’s Subcommittee on Oversight during her tenure as Ranking Member. The hall also served as temporary headquarters for President Harry Truman during his 1948 inauguration ceremonies; Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt officiated at that event from her nearby home at Hyde Park Corner. On January 7th 1825 John Penn Treaty was signed between Henry Knox and Great Britain which ceded nearly all of Canada west of Quebec to France without any compensations to Canada’s inhabitants or fur traders/settlers which included about 6500 Native Americans who lived near Lake Champlain including 4200 Creeks living within 3 miles of York Factory where French fur trader Pierre Dorion had built his first fur trading post in 1701-1702 A fortification by Fort Duquesne was completed along with other military installations around this time but no permanent resident British people lived there until 1824 when Captain James Cook landed on Christmas Island with his Resolution party seeking passage to China arrived here December 26th 1778 just after same day winter solstice then continued sailing up river they called "Island OF Newfoundland" then December 29th they reached latitude 49 degrees north so called accidently christmas island renamed fortunato he Heard say this place is Nunavut but we know better because captain Cook found it while looking for Terra Nova He said Greenwich Mean Time was true north longitude so therefore -Island OF Newfoundland must be Nunavut- right? Wrong! So we think maybe he meant cape Tormenta not fortunato correct? Maybe... wrong again! Still never sure! But whatever you choose to believe -at least we have proof that someone thought about it ! "As reported by Captain James Cook aboard Resolution in 1779"...the island "Fortunato", later renamed Cape Tormenta due to proximity to HMS Pandora off Long Island Sound] "...was discovered byCaptain James Cook while searching for Terra Nova..."Two islands located adjacent to each other--Fortunato Banks [known locally as Cape Tormenta]and Islet Head [identified only by Topo Map information], lay near present day Point Pleasant Township in Atlantic County."Although initial exploration failed to find any valuable resources on either island,[further exploration recommenced in 1800 under Commodore George Washington's command resulted in discovery of extensive coal seams beneath Fortunato Banks],[the area].became known colloquially throughout North America as 'Fortress Fortunato'."[The development]of shipbuilding industry along both banks led directlyto increased traffic through those waters; ships loading coal from Staten Island brought goods ashore at Fortress Fortunato several times per day beginning around 1800."Today Fortress Fortunato remains an important maritime center providing access to world markets with its deep harborage,"Accordingly...the name “Camden” probably originated with this location." Many residents still refer toFortress Fortunato today simply as “Fortress”."

Camden was founded by English colonists in 1684 as part of the Susquehanna Township Settlement. In 1837, it became a separate town and remained so until its incorporation into Essex County in 1974. The city is named after Sir John Camden, 1st Baronet who donated land for its founding and other improvements in 1684. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1684 and were led by Captain John Smith of Netherland who named his new settlement Camden after himself and his family. When Colonel George Washington's forces burned down Trenton during their final campaign against the British in 1776, they took refuge at Rutgers University before moving on to create Newark on November 15th of that year. By 1837, Camden had reached a population of 10,000 people which made it one of the largest townships in New Jersey at that time. Its growth continued through annexation by Middlesex County (1864), Passaic County (1910), Monmouth County (1939) and Atlantic City (1974). During World War II, Camden played an important role as an airfield supplying cities throughout southern New Jersey with munitions needed for war effort; many Victory gardens dot the downtown area today commemorating this period of history. Afterward, rapid gentrification characterized much of Camden's early 21st century development while declining crime rates have helped make it one of northern NJ's most livable cities
The area now called Camden was first settled in the early 18th century by English colonists. The town was named for Captain John Camden, who explored and surveyed the region in 1724. In 1828, the United States acquired what is now Camden from Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris after the American Revolution. The town became a municipality in 1846.
