Camden, New Jersey is a city in and the county seat of Camden County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a population of 58,744. The boroughs of Camden and Atlantic City are also located in Camden County. The total area is 40 square miles (100 km2). The first European settlement in what is now Camden was by Dutch colonists who founded a trading post on Governors Island in 1664 as part of their attempt to establish an Eastern trade route with Asia. During the American Revolutionary War, much fighting took place around Camden because British forces were trying to control this important connection between Philadelphia and Manhattan. After the war ended in 1783, most English settlers left for new opportunities in Pennsylvania or Massachusetts due to disease reasons or natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy which struck the area severely during that period. In 1814, General George Washington established Fort Independence at present- day Bergen Street and Market Place in what is now downtown Camden after he retreated from battle at Yorktown following his defeat at Saratoga Springs. In 1840, Philadelphia seceded from America and became a separate country under French rule; as a result, Fort Independence reverted to American hands until it was taken over by the U.S. government as part of itspost-war Reconstruction efforts following passage of the National Defense Act of 1867. ensuing peace years saw continuing development around Fort Independence until it closed down sometime before 1960 due to lack of use and funding by city leaders concerned about crime rates then low enough not warrant further investment despite growing populations within walkable limits due eastward growth then suburban expansion outgrowing those boundaries eventually leading to closure) During all these years though some buildings did remain including: A courthouse completed in 1868 on corner Market & Market Streets; George Washington Elementary School completed circa 1916 on Meetinghouse Road; The old Masonic Lodge built c1875 on Northumberland Avenue near State Street but demolished 1968 along with most other older buildings when redevelopment began there soon followed increasing commercial activity along contemporary streets south/west side characterized today largely as inner-city business districts although there are still notable older residential neighborhoods north/east side characterized today primarily for high school students’ housing developments etc.; several churches were built during this time including Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church Completed 1886 just across Northumberland Avenue from Masonic Lodge described below along with First Baptist church completed 1895 just eastbound on South Orange Avenue immediately adjacent thereto having served both denominations well through many incarnations including current Cathedral Basilica Americas Immaculate Conception Parish erected 1957 also just across Northumberland Avenue from Masonic Lodge described below together being among oldest surviving Catholic ecclesiastical institutions westward since 1676 when English Reformation began offensive against Catholicism heretics were burned alive etc.) However even afterFort Independence closed down&Masonic Lodge demolition 1968 local development continued mainly via conversions/developments within existing amateur homes/neighborhoods surrounding historic district gradually becoming more professionalized culminating perhaps with increased production given greater access good transportation links infrastructure modern amenities satellite TV services internet access restaurants etc.) rapidly gentrifying beginning perhaps early 1990s becoming increasingly full service high rise buildings large office complexes expensive real estate generally) while traditional manufacturing has continued notably some light manufacturing activities especially textiles & apparel continuing ashore mostly withinwalking distancealbeit sometimes distant former industrial sites)

During World War II, civilian users of binoculars played an important role in helping Allied forces identify enemy positions across vast distances while still being able to see smaller details on the battlefield below.
