This event became known as "The Burning of Camden". In 1815–1816, General James Moncrieffe’s brigade under Commodore John Rodgers attacked Fort Christina and burned it down while its inhabitants were still inside; this event is also cited as the first open conflict between English colonists and native peoples in America. As an act of retribution for what had been done to Newark earlier that year (by General Moncrieffe), Queen Victoria ordered Colonel John Stevens’ brigade from Manhattan under Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewing to march into Trenton through Camden on October 12th 1814 with orders not to fire upon any Indian villages or dwellings until after he had inspected them for compliance with her proclamation about removing all hostile Indians from this region before winter set in (the order specifically forbade shooting any living creatures). The fortifications which prevented gunfire some time during November can still be seen today near Masonic Lodge #1 on South Orange Avenue just east of Market Street where Rogers Bridge crossed over the Delaware River at that time
