Brigantine is a small town in New Jersey, located on the Delaware River. The population was 8,500 at the 2000 census. Brigantine is bordered by Princeton to the north and east, Elizabeth to the south and west, and Camden to the northwest. Brigantine is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,463 at the 2010 census. Brigantine is part of the Camden-Philly metropolitan area. The community was founded by settlers from the Dutch colony of New Netherland on October 17, 1676, when they moved from what is now Englewood Cliffs in Bergen County to create a new settlement on the Delaware Riverfront. In 1784, Brigantine became part of Passaic County and was renamed after Admiral George Washington's flagship HMS "Brigantine". The township was established in 1825 and absorbed into Hunterdon Township. It was merged into Camden Township on May 25, 1923. In 1865, Brigantine had one school; it closed in 1925 and all education stopped until 2002 when it reopened as a K-8 school with academy status through Montessori Charter School Incorporated (MCSI). On November 12, 1998 Brigantine began offering online coursework through ECTS Corporation website which continues until present day as an alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar classes offered by local schools. The school became coeducational starting September 1st 2014 with girls coming first then boys followed over time.
Brigantine was founded in 1875 by Captain George C. Burgess and his wife, Alice. The town was named after the brigantine that Capt. Burgess sailed from England on to New York City in 1874. The town grew rapidly and by 1900 had a population of over 1,200 people. In 1915, Brigantine became an incorporated municipality with a governing body made up of a Mayor and six Aldermen. In 1930, the name of the municipality was changed to Brigantine Township, Inc., in order to reflect its increasing incorporation status as a borough. On July 1, 1975, Brigantine Township achieved full city status when it merged with nearby Ocean County into one municipality.
