The town was founded in 1764 by Nicholas Garrick and named for its commanding view of the river from his home on High Street. The first school in Brigantine was opened in 1768. In 1832, Brigantine became a stop on the Erie Canal. It remained an important commercial center until the early 21st century when it declined due to economic decline and suburbanization. Today, Brigantine contains a few businesses including a local breweries and a few churches. Brigantine was incorporated as a borough on February 20, 1875, from portions of Rahway and Hackensack. In 1998 it became one of 29 municipalities in New Jersey to be merged into the larger Paramus Township. The first settlements in what is now Brigantine were made by Dutch farmers who were coming overland from Staten Island for trade purposes and settling near present-day Monmouth Junction and Bound Brook (now Hasbrouck Heights). On March 26, 1683 – during King George II's Interregnum – Captain Christopher Lambert led a group of settlers from Staten Island to this area when he discovered land that would become Brigantine on Lake Hudson. The first town meeting held in what is now Brigantine took place on October 17th of that year under the leadership of Samuel Smith and opened with present-day reference to "Hudson's Ferry" instead of "Brigantine". By 1716 most or all of what are now northeast Brigantine had been platted; including parts which would later form Rahway andHackensack. In 1875 Brigantine became one of three townships created within Bergen County by an act entitled "An Act for creating Townships within Bergen County." At that time only residents living within 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of each townshiphall be counted for voting purposes; brigantines did not have any public buildings other than their own homes which were all private addresses at that time. The remaining portion of northeastern Brigantine formed part of Rahway Township while Hackensack Township included much territory eastward to Middlesex Avenue including much later sections which would become Paramus Township (including some areas today known as North Arlington ultimately becoming South Paramus). WhenParamus Township was formed on April 14th 1907 its boundaries gradually expanded eastward towards Hackensack Creek until it reached everything north thereof but excludes present day northwestern corner where Paramus Now borders Borough Park along with some portions currently forming Freehold Borough still considered partParamus Township boundary although technically they are located in Borough Park due to lack off map coordinates
