The company was formed on December 17, 1775, in Brigantine, New Jersey by General George Washington and Colonel James K. Polk. The company fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill and Battle of Saratoga. The brigade under General Washington's command participated in the celebrated Sackville Expedition against British forces at Saratoga Springs. In 1812, the brigadier general Samuel Poultney organized a regiment from Brigantine to serve with distinction as part of Major-General John Woolridge's brigade during the war of 1812. In 1814, Captain Augustus Thornton organized a second rifle company from Brigantine to serve with distinction as part of Captain Thornton's brigade during the war of 1814. The brigadier general James Wilkinson organized a third rifle company from Brigantine on October 10, 1800; this unit served with distinction throughout the war until it was disbanded on July 15, 1802. Captain Wm Sibley organized a fourth rifle company from Brigantine on October 10, 1800; this unit served with distinction throughout the war until it was disbanded on November 3, 1800. On September 12, 1800Captain Isaac Brockman organize a fifth rifle company from Bridgeton Township for service in Commodore Nicholas Stevens' expedition against Stoney Creek near modern day Sayretown Heights in Burlington County NJ which resulted in no significant engagements but did cause damage to an arsenal at Stillwater while taking prisoners and capturing horses and munitions valued at over $2 million dollars

Brigantine was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The post office at Brigantine was established in 1828, and remained in operation until 1967. The community name is derived from the brigantine, a type of ship that ran between the Dutch colony of New Netherland and English ports on the Delaware River. The first data about Brigantine comes from an old map made by Nicholas de Vries in 1624. At that time there were only three houses registered in the settlement and just one school. In 1800 there were 20 people living here and five stores. By 1860 there were only 10 residents and two schools. In 1881 Brigantine had a population of 508 people who included 248 males and 248 females. The store at that time was run by Mr. Tilton with his wife Mrs Riggs as owners/ operators. There was also a blacksmith shop run by Blacksmith Haggerty which operated until 1915 when it reopened as an auto garage with its own workshop next door to the Post Office building which still stands today
