Brigantine is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 18,959. It was named after Brigantine Island in Delaware Bay and its location on the eastern edge of Middlesex County. Brigantine was incorporated as a borough on March 1, 1899, from portions of Deptford Township and West Perth Amboy Township. Brigantine is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,722 at the 2010 census. Brigantine was one of the original towns in Sussex County and was created from portions of Little Egg Harbor Township. It is located on the Delaware River about south of Camden and north of Asbury Park. The first settlement in what is now Brigantine date back to 1764 when two families, the Smiths and Bluefields settled there after migrating from Rhode Island. In 1812, John Deveraux built a cabin on the riverbank for his family which served as the nucleus for future businesses and residents. The village became known as "Deveraux's Ferry" because it facilitated passage between Little Egg Harbor Township and Sussex County. In 1831, brigadiergeneral Nathanael Greene took up arms against British forces under General James Clinton at Queenstown Heights near Brigantine; this event became known as the Battle of Queenstown Heights. By 1840, Brigantine had become an agricultural center with stores and a post office serving both local residents and those travelling through nearby Asbury Park or Camden. This period saw growth in business around dockside industries such as lumbering, shipbuilding, printing presses and tanning facilities along with new home construction by Anglo-American farmers fleeing prices unsustainable in New England during the 1830s & 1840s demographic change brought about by advancing western transportation technologies (the Erie Canal). In 1855–56 George Washington Goodloe conducted an expedition upriver from Philadelphia to inspect navigation on the Susquehanna River testimony to increasing viability of that route for commerce given its shorter distance to points beyond markets on Atlantic Canada than older routes across Pennsylvania via Yorktown or Lancasterthalkee Lakes watersheds then open only to Native Americans following fur trade routings prior thereto; Goodloe's report led Congress to establish US Canals System within Union Department which authorized purchase of first 4 miles wide self-propelled steamboat locks on Upper Susquehanna River just upstream from current day Brigantine waterfront & developed industrial Estate comprising over 2 million square feet land area now belonging to Port Authority Transportation District [now PATH] – thenceforth referred to as "Goodloeville". During entire nineteenth century significant development occurred along Upper Susquehannock River corridor Offense stopped short at Dogleg Creek due unsafe channel conditions preventing largescale commercial enterprise until major project commenced by NJ Turnpike Authority effective November 14th 1957 when first 1/4 mile wide elevated toll road opened connecting mainline NY State highways Interstate 95 & Route 9 eastbound thru Dover Downs Toll booth w/ gateway house facility @ Broadwalk Plaza – thenceforward commonly referred: "Brigantine Bridge" During World War II many businesses closed due directly or indirectly to wartime rationing but some such as Peddle Hardware reopened after hostilities ended; also among those who reopened were several talented architects including Alfred Hirschfeld who designed most notable landmark rebuilding projects including Trenton Waterfront (1946), Newark Bay Terminal (1948), Elizabethport Naval Shipyard (1951) & NorthJersey Mills Airport (1960). Additionally several artists such as Edward Hopper[1], Roy Lichtenstein[2]& Bruce Nauman[3] made their mark while working locally including surfacing work on Mystic Beach Pier Pavilion #2 completed summer 1961 adjacent property leased by county government forming Coastal Zone Management Program – thereafter commonly referred: “Newark Bay” or “Bayonne” Pierarchitecture during early 1960s witnessed rapid growth associated withBaby Boomer generation boomer demand for high quality federally funded community services notwithstanding increased opposition To suburban sprawl initiated by Town Manager Frank Lavin consequent difficult political balancing act between Federal funds necessary for infrastructure maintenance programs AND voter approval needed for continued annexation & expansion/development recession resulting caused numerous community layoffs during late 1960s thru early 1970s especially affectig naval personnel retiring early1970’sand Shipyards concessions closure mid-1970’still remaining significant economic challenges affecting town today
