Brigantine's name comes from a small river that flows through it. The community was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 as Fort Nassau on the Delaware River near present-day East Brunswick and grew rapidly due to its location and access to rail transportation. In 1837, Brigantine became an incorporated borough; it remained an unincorporated township until 1959. As of the 2010 census, there were 3,444 people living in Brigantine Borough (of which 2,844 lived in the Town of Fort Lee), making it one of New Jersey's most populous towns. Brigantine has been home to several large businesses and cultural institutions over the years including PNC Park (the third largest park in North America) and Neptune Beach amusement park. The city also hosted the first annual Rutgers–Newark football game in 1902 and has been host to other major events such as motor racing meetings and concerts since then.

Brigantine is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Washington and his family in 1785 as West Egg on the Monmouth Peninsula. In 1810 it became East Egg after the East Egg Canal was built to connect Trenton with Hackensack and other points on the peninsula. Brigantine's first post office opened in 1812. The Town of Brigantine was created from portions of East Egg on March 15, 1868, following an act of the New Jersey Legislature which merged portions of Cumberland Township and West Egg Township into Brigantine. In 1870-71, Brigantine constructed a wharf along what is now Watchung River for shipping products brought overland from Summit and Passaic Counties to build up its economy during Reconstruction. A sawmill followed soon after and produced rails for locomotives used by railroads throughout much of America during this time period; brigandine also became a popular fabric for clothing and carpets. A second wharf was built in 1875 at what is now River Road to serve as a landing point for shipping coming downriver from Princeton via Hackensack Creek (now called Delaware Bay) to supply mills in Passaic County and other parts of New Jersey until 1915 when that water source became polluted with oilseed lignite production Beginning in 1913-14 Brigantine began manufacturing cellulose insulation from recycled materials available from factories across America through trade shows attended by representatives of industry including Rockefeller Brothers Standard Oil Company executives John Dorsett Browning & Edwin Booth who were looking for ways to improve transportation efficiency while reducing emissions One result was that more than one hundred families moved into brigantine between 1913-1920 becoming known as "The Brickmakers" who made large contributions to local community building before moving out again when production ceased Although some continue living there today "the brickmakers' culture has been largely lost" There are no remains or structures still standing evidence remaining dating back to early 19th century
