Brigantine is located on the Delaware River and was once part of the greater Philadelphia area. It is now an agricultural community with a large water tower and several small businesses. The community started as a farmstead on what is now the border of woods and farmland about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Philadelphia in 1814 by captain George Washington Irving and his wife Margaret Livingston. In 1824, John Dickinson donated land to Brigantine for its own incorporation as a borough. The name "Brigantine" comes from English brigands who frequented this location because it had such strong tidal currents that shipping could not be landed there without taking risks with their cargo or ships. The first post office was established in Brigantine on April 15, 1825; it was discontinued July 6, 1826 due to low population numbers. A second post office opened at Norristown on November 12, 1830; it also closed July 6, 1826 due to low population numbers. In 1865, brigadier general James Wofford of Pennsylvania proposed annexing Brigantine into that state during a visit to the town; but no action was taken until 1870 when Attorney General George Hynes recommended annexation after learning about brigandage problems in neighboring towns like Norristown and Ardmore which were not annexed into Pennsylvania because they had lower populations than Brigantine did at that time (1,500 vs 1,571). On December 3rd 1870 an actwas passed by the New Jersey General Assembly annexing Brigantine into Sussex County as planned without any public hearings or debate due process concerns raised about then-Governor Nicholas Sacco's intentions related to possible consolidation of all municipalities within New Jersey under one government structure - this would have been known as "Sacco's Plan." After months of public protest led by local residents including then-Senator Robert Morris - who unsuccessfully appealed against annexation - Governor William Ewing finally vetoed the bill on January 5th1971 citing concerns over potential social unrest if more than 500 people were added to an already populous county (the number later increased to 1,827 thanks largely to natural growth following World War II). He reiterated these reservations in his veto letter explaining "There has never been anything among us but cold blooded envy manifested towards those who have absorbed and enlarged our little borough...It seems almost impossible for me...to sign legislation increasing together...a fractional part of my State" A referendum held in August 1971 rejected annexation by nearly two-thirds vote with only 11 ballots cast out of 2143 total votes returned (the largest rejection ever recorded in NJ history)). Some believe that Governor Ewing may have realized how unpopular this proposal would be had he allowed annexation while still in power considering his re-election prospects would have been much stronger given national attention focused on Trenton at that time;; however other reports claim that he realized too late that consolidation would happen regardless and may even have accelerated proceedingsHad he allowed annexation he likelywouldhavebeen impeached instead

Brigantine is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 15,853. The name is derived from a ford on the Hackensack River which served as an early transportation and trade center. The first mention of Brigantine was in 1194 when Nicholas of Susa wrote about "the brigantines" who lived near him on Long Island. In 1664, Brigantine was part of the English colony at Newark-on-Trent and became part of Bergen County. The first courthouse located in Brigantine was built in 1702 by Samuel Slatkin and it served until 1856 when it moved to Paramus. In 1859, Brigantine became one of two townships within Bergen Township when its eastern border was extended eastward by 3 miles (5 kilometers). On April 14, 1875, pursuant to an act entitled "An Act to amend certain statutes", brigantine become a Borough within Bergen Township due to incorporation by referendum from portions of Southwick Township along with Northvale and Teaneck municipalities adjacent thereto. The original town hall building still stands today on Division Avenue in Brigantine. It served as the township’s municipal building until 1904 when it burned down. In 1921, President Warren G Harding made his home here while he toured America before leaving office; he later donated $10 million towards putting up a new complex on Ferry Road that includes a former airplane hangar used by presidents since World War II—an event now known as Harding Park Day. On July 1st 1978, Brigantine opened its own ZIP code: 07708. At that time there were only nine municipalities in Bergen County and all but one were added to the county during 1978 through an act entitled "An Act To Consolidate Certain Municipalities").

The community grew rapidly with its maritime industry, and by 1890 had a population of 775. In 1912, Brigantine became an incorporated municipality. The municipality government struggled to find ways to support this growth and budget restrictions forced it to reduce services and close some businesses. In 2015, Brigantine voters passed a referendum asking for secession from the municipality. This vote failed but saw increased attention from outside sources due to the issue.
