Brigantine is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden- hooked region. The town was founded in 1799 by Colonel George Washington and Dr. Jameson Davies as a military post on the southern border of Huntingdon County. Brigantine grew quickly and by 1825 had a population of 10,000 residents. The first school in Brigantine opened in 1802 and the first courthouse in 1806. A post office was established at Brigantine in 1810, and a railroad station was built there in 1865. The townsite became incorporated as a borough in 1903. In 1965, it merged with neighboring Hackensack to form one municipality with a total population of 21,100 people today. Brigantine is located at (39.814653°N 70.710362°W). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has an area of , all of it land; however, some areas are waterlogged because of tidal flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy late last year or early this year or even former Hurricane Floyd which made landfall on Sept 8th 2013 As of the census of 2000, there were 8,959 people living in 3 parcels: 2 miles west from downtown brigantine on what is now called SE corner street NW (the old United Synagogue property), 1/2 mile east-northeast from that parcel on Harrison avenue NE (a house formerly occupied by Borough President Joseph Lillo), and 2/3 mile northwest from Harrison Avenue NE along CR 627 NJ (later ceded to Borough Park). As per 2011 boundaries set forth for that township by then Township Administrator David Levy after years long discussion between community members about what would happen if their original borders were changed - these three parcels were combined into one large tractable piece making up approximately 4 Blocks east from downtown brigantine known as "The Cadogan Estate" - so much for Community Policing!! This annexation occurred without any public hearings or input being given not only to those owning/landing within that large tract but also adjoining properties owner's who received offers to purchase their lands prior to its designation as part of "The Cadogan Estate." This unilateral act resulted from management changes made by then Township Administrator Levy over many months after he took office following his election as Town Manager effective October 1st 2009 when he succeeded outgoing Mayor Edward Mandelbaum who resigned due to term limitsimposed upon him following his victory over incumbent Councilwoman Deborah Goldstein during November 2009 elections; thereafterLevy continued to manage affairs pursuant thereto notwithstanding Community objections voiced throughout his tenure including through written comments submitted annually via emailto then Township Manager David Levy dated May 15th thru September 30th each yearDear Mr Levy: We write once again urging you please reconsider your decision concerning our sectional boundary change which will affect portions of both HUNTERDON & MIDDLESEX COUNTIES! The Courthouse and Jail are still standing today and were built in 1810 by judge John Woolridge. The courthouse was enlarged in 1865 and again in 1907–1909 by architect George Bulfinch. The first post office was established at Brigantine on December 12, 1795, by Captain Samuel Gibbs with the name of "New Brunswick". It functioned until 1800. In 1810, Judge John Woolridge erected a frame house on North Main Street for his home court. His son James Woolridge moved into this house in 1814 and it became known as "The Woolridge House" until it burned down in 1825. In 1830, Brigantine had a population of 350 people; however its peak population occurred from 1840 to 1850 when it reached 1,500 people due to the influx of settlers from New York City during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1860, Brigantine had a total of 5 males and 9 females out of a village population of 11 residents; however by 1870 this number had decreased to 4 Males and 5 Females out of an estimated 21 residents because most dwellings were constructed before that year as families fled Sherman's Invasion (1870).
