Brigantine, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Hackensack River. The first settler in Brigantine was Nicholas of Amboy in 1795. The village of Brigantine was founded by David Barclay in 1802 and named for his Maronite Catholic saint, Brigitte de Montfort. In 1814, Brigantine became part of the Township of Plainsboro and removed to what is now Hunterdon County from Middlesex Township which had been created in 1798 as part of the eastward expansion of New Jersey by Governor George Washington Carver. The town's first store opened on Market Street on July 1, 1857 and soon became one of the leading commercial centers in eastern Hunterdon County. Brigantine was incorporated as a township on April 15, 1872 following an act by Congress that granted township status to areas within “an area contiguous with [New York City] but not included within its limits” which at that time included all of Hunterdon and Monmouth Counties except for portions including Rahway and Atlantic City which were merged into Bergen County that year. On May 5th, 1907 Pierpont Morgan died when his train derailed near Bound Brook while en route from Elizabethtown to Morristown; he is buried nearby at Bellefontaine Cemetery along with other notable NJans such as Bob Livingston (Governor), James Buchanan (Secretary Of State), Alexander Graham Bell (the inventor who developed telephone technology) & others. During World War II Brigantine served as an airfield for USAAF units based atTextron Aircraft Factory at Bound Brook Airport until 1945 when it closed due to wartime limitations on military aviation facilities south of Trenton NJ

Brigantine is a town in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known reference to Brigantine was in 1267 when it was spelled "Brogate." In 1664, John Thomson made a survey of the area and named it after Brigantia (or Brigantini), an Italian princess who had been married to King James II of England. brigantine means "branch" or "stem" in Italian and this is likely where the name originated from. In 1871, Brigantine became a borough; however, it reverted to borough status in 1973 after being proposed by Mayor George Norcross. The community sprang up around what are now three churches: St Andrew's Episcopal Church on the south side of Broadway between Clinton and Neptune Streets (founded in 1784), Baptist church on Maple Street east of Neptune Street (founded in 1792) and First Presbyterian Church on North Brunswick Avenue north of Hudson River Boulevard (founded in 1811). In 1881/82, local farmers started growing sugarcane for export to Cuba via New York City's fleet of sailing vessels known as clippers which sailed along the coast from Staten Island to Havana; these ships took load off shore for shipment back upriver through Port Newark and then upstate into New York City before finally docking at Battery Park for reloading. The farmers continued this business until about 1920 when larger mills closed down and shipping stopped altogether leaving behind an empty coastal strip that has seen occasional development over time but little change since then other than some new housing developments built along Route 22 near where there once were sugar cane fields
Brigantine was originally settled in 1718 by Nicholas Scherrer and his wife, Catharine. The Scherrers were the first Europeans to live in what is now Brigantine Township. In 1792, General John Sullivan founded Brigantine Naval Yard here. The naval yard was used to build warships during the Revolutionary War and later during the American Revolution. After the war, Brigantine became a commercial center with whaling being its primary industry. In 1857, Brigantine incorporated as a village and developed as a town over time.
