Brigantine is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the NewarkâTrenton metropolitan area. The area that would become Brigantine was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1664 as "Verwijderdheuvel", meaning "undeveloped hill". In 1714, the Swedes founded a settlement called Nordstrandt (later renamed Stratholme) on what is now Brigantine Boulevard and Federal Highway. A post office was established at Nordstrandt in 1727 and remained in operation until 1821. In 1849, the town of Rahway was formed from parts of Stratholme and Brigantine; both towns were incorporated as villages on April 11, 1849. Rahway became an independent borough on March 15, 1903. On November 3rd, 1907, it merged with stratholme to form brigantine Borough which continued to exist as an unincorporated community until its annexation by Newark on November 3rd 1926. On October 1st 1958 Squiresville Township voted to join with brigantine Borough in order to improve infrastructure within the township including better roads and bridges as well as fire protection for residents living near Atlantic City Airport located just east ofsquiresville during those days there wasn't even a municipality! At that time all municipalities were unincorporated areas so this addition made sense considering that much of our township today still falls within stratholme's borders!

Brigantine was founded in 1675 by Col. Thomas Brigantyne as a small trading post on the Delaware River. It became an important junction for goods traveling east and west from Pennsylvania and New York City, and it also served as a frontier outpost against Indian attacks. In 1803, Brigantine was acquired by Commodore John D. Stockton, who moved the town's main courthouse to the site of today's State House. The town continued to grow rapidly during the 19th century, thanks in part to its role as an important commercial center on the river. In 1881, Brigantine became one of 11 towns in New Jersey added to the state of New York, following its annexation by that state. By 1920, however, brigantine had reverted back to its original status as a local community with no statewide significance.
