Bridgeton, New Jersey is a town located in Essex County, New Jersey on the Raritan River. The population was 22,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Pottersville Plantation was founded by Nicholas Potter in 1795 and became one of America's leading landowners during the Revolutionary War period. The original home of George Washington and his family was located in Pottersville until 1814 when they moved to Mount Vernon (now Arlington National Cemetery). In 1824, Nicholas Potter donated land for a public school in what is now Bridgeton. The first high school in Bridgeton opened its doors in 1886. Bridgeton residents are known for their fine produce including fruits and vegetables, poultry, eggs, cheese and other dairy products as well as their distinctive Brideton architecture which features Stickley door hinges and locally made items such as fireplaces, lamps and window sills. In 1948, Bridgeton began to experience rapid growth with the opening of the new Ironbound Bridge over the Raritan River connecting Camden to Morris Township across the river. This led to an increase in traffic on Route 9W which had become a primary thoroughfare through town since it crossed county lines. As a result of this growth and increased vehicular traffic on Route 9W several bridges were built including Interstate 287 crossing over Route 9W just south of town - one providing drivers with an uninterrupted view out their windows into neighboring communities while driving through town; another crossing over South Street near Exit 7A which provides access from I-287; and finally a new bridge being constructed across Main Street that will connect Routes 9W and 8E after years of planning by Mayor John Aherns

Bridgeton, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town had a population of 453. The ZIP code for Bridgeton is 08608. The first European settlers in what is now Bridgeton were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664 and named the area "Bridgeton". In 1837, Englishman John Stevens founded the village of Bridgeton on land he purchased from the Morris family. The name was chosen to honor Brigadier-General George Washington's daughter-in-law (whose husband had died before her) and namesake of Mount Vernon. In 1881, local residents voted to incorporate as a borough; this was followed by referendum in 1902 to make it an independent municipality with its own government and taxes. It became an unincorporated community on November 3, 1916 when it merged into Rahway Township. On December 1st of that year, Rahway Township passed a resolution annexing Bridgewood and other parts of Ridgefield Township into Bridgeton Borough because they felt that their rural setting would be beneficial to new arrivals who were seeking opportunities close to shopping areas such as Secaucus and West Caldwell. On February 14th of 1922, following ratification by voters in both municipalities, township officials announced plans for a waterworks project which would make bracing dockage available at high tide for vessels docking at Pascack Bayou near present day Springvale beachfront park through 2021. This $2 million project was funded by private individuals as well as state appropriations until 1935 when state funding ended due to budget cuts within New Jersey Politics & Government section guidelines set forth by then Governor Woodrow Wilson's administration.) Construction began on July 15th 1923rd with completion reached on October 2nd 1925 after 4 years and over 100% investment from private sources including William Kappmeyer Chairman Standard Oil Company).
