Today, there is still significant gun violence present throughout Bridgeton - with at least 21 homicides reported between January 1st and November 30th of 2017 - but it thankfully appears to be decreasing every year.

Bridgeton is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 15,631 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth largest municipality in New Jersey and the second most populous town in Hunterdon County after East Brunswick. The first Europeans to visit Bridgeton were Dutch traders who came ashore on Long Island in 1609. In 1714, Bridgeton was incorporated as a borough by order of Upper Township officials. The township ceased to exist on March 14, 1834 when it was merged into Hunterdon Township. Bridgeton became an unincorporated community within Hunterdon Township on December 5, 1926. On July 1, 1960, it became part of Borough of Rahway upon the merger of Mercer and Monmouth townships. On October 23rd of that year it voted to become an independent city with its own mayor and council (the first such vote in Atlantic County). On November 3rd City Council approved election results showing that 54% of residents supported incorporation as an Independent City while 46% opposed incorporation which made Bridgeton one of the few municipalities in Atlantic County not subject to state government control under the new form of government known as Municipal Utility Districts or MUDs. On April 13th, 1984 Borough President John Fenton announced plans for an expressway through what is now Bridgeton/Rahway annexed territory including parts of neighboring Mercer Township (to be called I-95). This caused great outrage among many residents who felt they had been taken advantage of by developers - particularly those living near I-95 and Pascack Lake Avenue which were proposed routes for the expressway. The campaign against the expressway failed but raised public awareness about how important it was for their local communities to have their voice heard and helped pressure Governor Christie into vetoing the bill allowing I-95 through Bridgeton without compensation for those impacted by its construction

Bridgeton was founded in 1795 by John Bridgeton and his wife, Martha. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other vegetables. In 1814, the town was renamed after General James Braddock. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became part of Union County in 1824. It had a population of around 650 people when it became part of Monmouth County in 1828. The population peaked at 1,500 people in 1870 but declined to 500 people by 1920.
