Bridgeton, NJ is a city in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,723 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hunterdon County and part of the Camden-Newark metropolitan area. The city was first settled in 1795 by British colonists as Upper Bridgeton Township and was incorporated as a borough on August 14, 1834. On April 15, 1868, it became a city and on December 13th of that year it merged with Mount Holly Township to form what is now known as Camden Townships Borough. In 1909 an ordinance was passed forbidding handguns within the municipality limits while also authorizing shotguns and rifles without prior written consent from all residents. This ordinance remains in effect today. On November 10th 1938 Bridgeton applied for membership in the New Jersey State Police which would have allowed law enforcement officials to carry firearms for their own protection inside the municipality limits should they find themselves in between official calls or patrols outside of municipal boundaries

The name of the town comes from Bridgiton Hall which once stood on the bank of the river Raritan and served as a summer home for members of the Morris County Legislature. Bridgeton was originally an agricultural community with small businesses located along main streets that ran through the center of town. By 1925, however, most of these businesses had closed or been acquired by larger companies and Bridgeton began to lose its independent character. One major change that took place during the 20th century was the increased presence of steel plants in central New Jersey which led to an increase in job opportunities for residents and their families. In addition to this economic development, other important changes during this time include advances in transportation which made it easier for people to get around and new developments such as shopping malls which helped change how people spend their days
