Bridgeton is a small town in New Jersey, located on the banks of the Raritan River. The population was 5,427 at the 2010 census. It is part of Mercer County and is bordered by Union Township to the north, East Brunswick Township to the east, and West Orange to the south. The first Europeans to visit Bridgeton were Dutch settlers in 1624 who called it "Bridgetown". The name derived from an Indian word meaning "brickyard" or "building." In 1714, James Cook visited this area while on his voyage through North America and gave the name Bridgeton Bay to what is now Rutgers University. In 1836, General John P. Morgan founded a mill here which became one of the largest employers in town. During World War II, Bridgeton served as headquarters for American forces in Europe. In 1951, Bridgeton was incorporated as a borough with a population of 3,586 residents. On March 14th of that year, it became an independent municipality with its own government and full voting rights within Mercer County until 1989 when it merged into neighboring Union Township. The township has experienced some significant changes over time including being completely surrounded by Morris County until 1974 when it voted to become an open-air shopping mall; also seeing rapid growth during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 which left many homes destroyed or damaged; as well as experiencing waves of new development throughout recent years such as maquiladora complexes and luxury apartment buildings dotting its streetscape In 2013-14 Bridgeton's elected officials began their final years in office after serving two terms each since 2009-10 through 2020-21 inclusive due to term limits set forth by NJ Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D). At this time there are 4 members currently serving out those years - Borough President Mark Reckless (2011-12), Deputy Borough President Kelly Szeliga (2013-14), Borough Councilmember Kurt Diehl (2015-) and Borough Councilmember Libby Schaefer (2017-.present).

Bridgeton, New Jersey is a borough in Burlington County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 36,609. The name "Bridgeton" was first given to the community by Colonel John Braddock on October 9, 1759. The town of Bridgeton was incorporated as a village on April 15, 1813. On December 12, 1865, it became a town again and on January 1st of 1971 it became a Borough. The borough is located in southern Burlington County and borders the towns of East Brunswick and North Caldwell to the east; Woodbridge Township to the south; Westville Township to the west; and Rahway Township to the north. The borough shares boundaries with Denville Township across Route 78 (the main thoroughfare within Borough borders) and also has territorial waters with Atlantic City through its shared water jurisdictional boundary with Ocean Isle Beach Municipal Authority. According to the United States Census Bureau, Bridgeton had a total area of , all of it land. It is one of two municipalities in New Jersey that are completely surrounded by open seas - both Monmouth County and Ocean Isle Beach Municipal Authority have their entire jurisdictions within these boundaries as well. As such, residents must cross into Atlantic City for most services or activities other than government business - although there are some exceptions like public transportation which operates from either side of Routes 78/9A which connect Atlantic City with Burlington County while running through Bridgeton's territory
