The first firearms were brought to Bridgeton, New Jersey in the early 1800s. The town's first store was opened in 1812 and soon began selling rifles, pistols, and shotguns. In 1824, a gunsmith named Nicholas Douglass opened a shop in downtown Bridgeton and quickly became known for his quality firearms. By 1830, the town had two stores and twenty-four residents. In 1835, a rifle company was organized in Bridgeton and soon began manufacturing weapons for the local militia. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Bridgeton saw heavy conflict as both Confederate forces and Union soldiers fought for control of the town. The town's guns played an important role in helping to defend against Confederate attacks and also played a part in repelling an attack by Union forces. After the war ended, many of Bridgeton's residents decided to move away from the smalltown atmosphere and start anew elsewhere. However, some of these original entrepreneurs still live inBridgeton today thanks to their businesses or connections to the community.

The name of the town comes from the Bridgeton Brook which flows through it and forms the border of Mercer County and Burlington County. The first European settlers in what is now Bridgeton were Dutch colonists who established a trading post there in 1664. From 1714 to 1775, Bridgiton was part of Pennsylvania until Confederation as New Jersey. In 1812, after the Treaty of Utrecht ceded control of Upper Canada to Great Britain, Bridgiton became part of British North America as part of Middlesex County. As a result, its residents were considered British subjects even though they are American citizens. Bridgeton had been known for its timber industry before World War II when munitions production began there; however since then it has become an annual tourist destination for both local residents and visitors because of its beautiful landscapes and history including being home to one-time U.S. president James Buchanan (1829-1906). In addition to tourism, Bridgeton is also home to several businesses that produce food products such as agriculture and dairy products as well as retail establishments such as clothing stores and furniture stores. According to the United States Census Bureau, Bridgewater Township had a total area of , all land. As of the census[1]of 2010,[2] there were 7,811 people residing in Bridgewood Township: 5,746 households (78% married couples living together), 2% female householder with no husband present (0%), 945 housing units (15% owner-occupied) and 312 occupied apartments (9% rental). The racial makeup included 6%, African Americans or African American descendants 0%, Native Americans 1%. There are no Hispanic or Latino residents in this township according to that data set However many people from Latin America lived here during their childhood or adolescence

Bridgeton is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1814 by English settlers and derives its name from Brigitte de Vaux, wife of Colonel Isaac Bridgeton. The first European to set foot in what is now Bridgeton was Captain John Smith in 1608 when he explored and mapped the region as part of his voyage from England to North America. Commodore Nicholas Longboats anchored at "Bridgetown" on Saturday Evening Island (now called Sandy Hook) on July 12th, 1770 during the American Revolution while supplies were being unloaded for General George Washington's army at Fort Ticonderoga. From this initial settlement a small community grew up around the wooden wharf built by Captain John Smith on October 11th, 1770 which became known as "Bridgetown." In 1814, Colonel Isaac Bridgeton purchased land east of present-day Broad Street from the Dutch colony of West Jersey and began to settle it with his own family and friends. In 1831, he donated 363 acres (1 km2) north of Broad Street to form what would become Bridgeton Township; this donation formed the nucleus for today's village center located adjacent to Interstate 95/Route 73A across from Veterans Memorial Coliseum NFL football stadium On December 20th, 1835 President Andrew Jackson signed an order increasing acreage for township development from 323 acres (146 hectares) to 518 acres (219 hectares). This order created muchneeded housing development within Bridgeton Township which would soon outgrow its original boundaries with respect to land holdings and population growth as well as infrastructure needs such as roads and schools. Today's Village Center forms one end of a long corridor stretching along I-95/Route 73A before terminating near Citi Field sports arena just outside Elizabethtown Borough limits
In 1814, Bridgeton was chartered as a town by the Dutch. It was named for Brigitte de Vries, who had been born in the town in 1759. In 1831, Bridgeton became an independent city and adopted its current name.
