Bridgeton is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,865 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from "bridgewater" meaning a crossing over a stream. Bridgiton is located on the banks of the Raritan River and includes portions of both Bridgeton Township and Asbury Park Township. The first settlement in what is now Bridgiton was made by Nicholas de Schudi in 1675. By 1701, there were 10 houses in the township but no townsite had been chosen because there wasn't enough water to support it. In 1727, George Washington came through farming country near present-day Bridgeville on his way to Princeton University and stopped at an old farmhouse known as "The Horseshoe," which he used as his headquarters for two days while he consulted with local leaders about forming a new community. In 1739, Thomas Telford built a mill on the Raritan River just west of what is today's intersection of Bridgeton Boulevard and Route 9W. This became one of the most important economic engines in Bridgiton throughout its history; it furnished flour, sawdust, timber and other materials for local mills until it closed in 1854. In 1835, John Fenton erected what is now called "Fenton's Store" on Main Street; this store played an important role not only in stocking local goods but also providing essential services such as plumbing and heating during those early years before electric lighting arrived later that same year. In 1846, when New Jersey was admitted into Union as a state, Bridgiton became part of Hunterdon County and changed its name to Bridgeton after Governor William Tilden vetoed legislation naming it Garden City because Garden City would have included land within present-day Asbury Park Township that would have taken away from BridgetON residents their right to vote therein (the boroughs' incorporation had been approved by referendum). Today's downtown area around Main Street/Route 9W was developed primarily during World War II when many companies moved into or relocated to Witwatersrand Drive/Broadwalk due to wartime shortages of housing south of Trenton NJ (during this time much manufacturing still took place close to where people lived). In 1870, the town had just under 1,000 residents and included only a few buildings. However, over time Bridgiton began to grow rapidly, thanks to its natural resources and its location close to New York City. By 1900 Bridgiton had reached 5,700 residents and consisted of 29 buildings. In 1916, the United States government purchased land adjacent to the then-new bridge across the Hackensack River for $2 million dollars (the current version of the bridge was built two decades later). This gave rise to the idea of developing Bridgiton as an artificial community – something that would allow it to remain independent from New York City while still benefiting from its many cultural attractions. The development process proceeded slowly at first due to financial reasons; however, by 1924 it was clear that artificial communities were becoming more popular than ever before. After several years of testing and design work, construction on bridgetonian II began in 1928! The original purpose of bridgetonian II was not simply as a tourist center – it also served as an experimental laboratory for creating new forms of housing and infrastructure that would be used throughout New York City during the 1930s when World War II started. After successfully completing its tests phase,[1]bridgetonian II quickly became one of the most successful artificial communities ever created[2]. Today bridgetoning remains one of America’s favorite tourist destinations thanks both to its beautiful landscape and rich colonial history!
