Bridgeton, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 4,641 at the 2000 census. The town is situated on the Delaware River and is bordered by two other towns- Uniondale to the northwest and East Brunswick to the southeast. The name of Bridgeton comes from English settlers named Breda who came in 1693. They named their new settlement after Brigid, an Irish girl whom they had befriended on their journey westward. In 1701, John Small founded a post office in what is now Bridgeton and it remained in operation until 1912. The first schools were built in 1892 and there are still several today that serve children throughout the township. Bridgeton has been home to many businesses over the years including Ford Motor Company (1896), United States Steel Corporation (1910), American Tobacco Company (1912), J W Marriott Hotel (1950), Philipsburg Brewing Company (1968) and Ivey's Department Store which closed its doors in 2006 but reopened as part of PNC Bank's redevelopment project next door later that year. Some of these businesses have continued operations such as Ford Motorsports Park which currently employs over 200 people manufacturing cars for export around the world; Ivey's Department Store remains open as a Barnes & Noble book store with a large selection of Judaica items; while Ford Motorsports Park closed its doors for good in 2006 but reopened as one of PNC Bank's redevelopment projects next door later that year under new management). The community center was also once operated by Philipsburg Township Schools before being taken over by Redevelopment Authority of Mercer County when it opened in 2006 adjacent to PNC bank headquarters across from McGraw-Hill Education Campus - one of only two school districts statewide operated by NJ State Education Dept., despite countywide efforts by others to operate such districts In recent years much focus has shifted towards economic development with various initiatives such as retail/commercial revitalization project along riverfront opposite train station; revival/update of Pickeringtown Arts District located near high school; development/purchase/ demolition of several abandoned homes within walking distance commercial or residential areas industrial park located east side of river adjacent thereto completed in fall 2016 comprising formeriantal powerhouse plant used primarily for power generation during night hours not used since early 1990s due to environmental concerns; renovation/expansion/removal etc./replacement etc./of remaining brick buildings at steel millsite adjacent riverfront consisting mostly single family dwellings formerly employed workers at plant during day heathstone missile production peak during late 1960s through early 1970s prior owner shutdown activity and subsequent abandonment

Bridgeton, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey on the border of the township of Branchburg and Middlesex County. The population was 5,612 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Brigitte Bardot who was born in Bridgeton, New York in 1907. The first permanent settler arrived in 1798 and by 1824 there were five families living in what is now Bridgiton. In 1827 two more families moved to Bridgiton from Perth Amboy and Monmouth County. By 1830 there were 11 households and 3 businesses with a total population of 20. In 1837 one family removed to what is now West Orange and two others moved to Ridgefield Township where they founded the village of Bridgewater (later called Bridgeton). By 1840 Bridgewater had 10 households, 2 churches, 1 schoolhouse and 4 stores. On December 3rd of that year an act was passed by the General Assembly givingBRIDGITTON as its name to conform with that of other towns within Mercer county which had received similar names from state legislatures over time including Rahway (1834), Paterson (1835), Elizabethtown (1838), Newton Center (1840), Sayre Heights (1843) etcetera. A post office was established at Bridgewater in 1839 which continued until 1888 when it became part of Trenton. In 1860 the first train reached Bridgewater from Morristown via Princeton Junction carrying passengers for Trenton, Morrisania,ahalf way across Pennsylvania through Middlesex County beforereaching NJ at Paterson Junction west of Bound Brook On July 9th 1861 three hours after President Abraham Lincoln's speech announcing his Emancipation Proclamation Persons leaving slavery pursuant to this order commenced arriving at Pierpoint Landing whereupon wagonsloads were unloading into Brigantine Creek near present-day Kingston Pike for transportation back home on ship cars downriver past Trenton before reaching Newark Bayou for discharge thence into smaller boats headed up river for points northward After Union victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg on July 15th 1863 many people streamed back eastward along Route 66 including many residents of Bridgewater who decided to relocate here following election results showing Ulysses S Grant being elected president overall
Bridgeton was founded in 1799 by Nicholas Bridgeton and his wife, Elizabeth. It became a borough in 1855 and a city in 1906.
