Citizens used their rifles to protect themselves from Native Americans, bandits, and other criminals. From 1835 to 1840, citizens armed themselves for internal security when Tories threatened the townspeople with violence if they did not vote for the Tory candidate. In 1847, citizens voted to prohibit carrying firearms without a license and carry weapons only on private property within one’s own house or farmstead. This ordinance became known as the “Bridgeton Bill” because it protected citizens from being robbed and attacked while wielding their guns on public streets or highways. On March 15, 1912, Bridgeton merged with neighboring West Bergen Township and became one municipality. Bridgeton is located on Route 201 about east of Newark Liberty International Airport and west of Hackensack City Hall. It has a total area of , all within Morris County except for a small section in Sussex County which is in Union County. It lies within the Pascack Valley National Wildlife Refuge and is bordered by Westfield Township to the north, Neptune Beach Borough to the south, Great Neck Borough to the southwest and Union Park Borough to the northwest (the boroughs are each represented by an elected justice of peace). Bridgeton is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 28,711. The name was derived from the Bridgeton River and its tributaries. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bridgeton were Dutch traders in 1614. In 1714, Anthony Wayne founded a trading post here with other colonists that included John Montresor and his brother-in-law Arthur Stroud. The first settlement at what is now Bridgeton was established by Nicholas Guerin in 1724 as a small town on the south side of the river. It grew rapidly thanks to its natural resources: coal and iron ore along the river, timber trees inlands, and waterpower from several dams on former Indian reservations upstream. In 1835, when Morrisania detached from Middlesex County and formed itself into a separate township, Bridgeton became part of that township. By 1840 it had become an important manufacturing center with tanneries (now closed), breweries (now Allentown Brewing Company), distilleries (now Pemberton Distilling Co.), corn mills (now operated by Bedminster Corn Mill Partners LLC), cheese factories (now operated by Gouda Cheese USA Inc.), printing presses (later moved to Camden), and numerous small businesses including sawmills (later sold to Phelps & Mason Paper Mills) and grist mills ( later sold ). Most of this growth came about through immigration: many Germans arrived during the 1850s followed by Irishmen during the 1860s. In 1881, after being merged with parts of East Brunswick Township spelling "Bridgewater" due to lack of any other candidates who submitted petitions for incorporation as a new municipality there seemed no real need for two towns named Bridgewater so both names were dropped from municipal records until 1903 when they were reinstated as part of Edison ville . In 1916–1917 World War I caused much destruction in Europe; much more damage took place in America than anywhere else due to wars fought between European countries plus America's entry into World War II which led to increased production at munitions plants all over America including those located within New Jersey which resulted in higher wages for workers than ever before making Bridgwater an attractive choice for manufacturers looking for non-stop production . After 1945 large numbers of people left Bridgwater for various reasons such as political or social unrest found throughout most industrialized societies following war-time changes wrought by technology while also creating opportunities available inland where jobs could be created outside industries such as agriculture or searchlight engineering etcetera resulting not only in loss but also regeneration back onto downtown streetscapes complete with renovated buildings erected since 1946
