Bridgeton, New Jersey is a small town located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The population was 7,876 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Brigid Sullivan, who settled there in 1792. Brigid's father had been a member of the first group of English colonists to arrive in what is now Monmouth County. She started trading goods with the Indians and built a cabin near the present-day intersection of Route 31 and Westville Avenue. In 1802, she married James Bridgeton and they moved to what is now Union City. James operated a ferry service between Union City and Bridgeport until his death in 1836. His wife continued running the ferry business until her own death in 1840. In 1857, Brigid's granddaughter Charity founded the first post office in Bridgeton with seven postal employees serving two months each summer from her home on Main Street (now US 1). The Post Office remained open until 1912 when it closed due to financial difficulties caused by World War I. In 1951, Bridgeton became part of Rahway Township which merged into Middlesex County in 1974. As part of this merger, Bridgeton lost its status as an independent municipality and became one of the five townships within Middlesex County proper. On July 1, 2007, all but three of the township’s residents voted to unite with Rahway Township back into Monmouth County as part of larger efforts to reduce municipal government consolidation throughout New Jersey because it felt that monied interests were at odds with public interest]. In 1994, America finally got its hands on an Altair C8 cannon - this allowed it to fire projectiles with a range of more than 1 kilometer (800 feet). It wasn't until 2003 that Israel made its own version of this weapon called Iron Dome - this uses ground based lasers rather than guns to shoot down incoming missiles

The name "Bridgeton" originated from when English settlers first arrived in the area in the early 17th century. In 1874, Bridgeton became an incorporated town and changed its name to "Bridgeton Township". After being made a borough by referendum on November 3, 1978, Bridgton Township absorbed all of Bridgeton's former municipalities on July 1, 1988. As of the 2010 Census, there were 8,419 people living in Bridgeton Borough and 7,819 residents living within Bridgton Township.
