Bridgeton is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from an early settler named Bridgeton who built a cabin on the banks of the Raritan River in 1814. The first incorporated municipality in Morris County was called West Morristown (1838-1903). It was located east of where Bridgeton now stands and included parts of what are now Princeton Township and East Brunswick Township. In 1903, it merged with East Brunswick to form Bridgeton. The township was formed as a result of an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 10, 1868, which granted land to be set aside for townships in Morris County. The township was erected by an act on April 3, 1868. At its formation it included parts of what are nowPrinceton Township and East Brunswick Township. On December 14, 1890, portions were taken away from Bridgeton to make way for Springdale Borough within Middlesex County which had been formed that year by merger of several municipalities including Hackensack (later Parsippany), Plainsboro (later South Plainfield), Union City (later Vineland), Red Bank (now Ridgewood) and Somerset Heights (later Monmouth Junction). In 1908 municipal elections were held in all but one township; Clifton Park municipalities voted not to participate because they felt that they would have no say in local government matters if their constituents did not vote there likewise. On May 16th 1907 – just over two years after incorporation – Dickinson Avenue became part of Bridgeton when it crossed Route 22 near today’s Walmart parking lot off Park Street into town limits

The town is part of the Parsippany-Troy Hills borough and is considered part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. It was founded in 1784 by Scots immigrants who named it after their home village of Bridgwater in Somerset, England. The first European to visit Bridgeton was Captain John Smith on November 12, 1784. In 1837, surveyors designated Bridgeton as the site for a new county seat due to its strategic location between Newark and Jersey City. On October 11, 1854, when New Jersey became an independent state, Bridgtontony was merged into Newark Township and received its own government with responsibility for education and social services. In 1885, the township became an independent municipality under the name of Parsippany-Troy Hills Borough; it remains an unincorporated community today. The Morrisania Manufacturing Company located in Parsippany-Troy Hills created over 100 jobs right before World War II during wartime production of military equipment such as tanks and fighter planes.
