Bridgeton was founded on December 12, 1814 by Nicholas de Lancey and his wife Elizabeth De Lancey as "Bridgewater Township". On April 6, 1875 it became a city within Morris County. On February 14, 1984 it lost its charter as a city and became an incorporated borough with same boundaries as Morris County. Heading into the 21st century Bridgeton has seen some growth with expansions of its park system and new development such as the TPC Sawmill Park which opened in 2009 adjacent to the former textile mill site that once employed 5,000 people.

Bridgeton is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 4,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. The name comes from a daughter of English immigrants who named their farm "Bridgeton" after his home country. The first European settlers in what is now Bridgeton were led by Capt. John Smith in 1723 and founded a small cabin on the west side of the Hackensack River. In 1734, they moved to what is now known as the southeast corner of town and began to build a house which still stands today- it is called the White House. At that time, Bridgeton was only about 10 miles (16 km) away from Newark and 25 miles (40 km) from Philadelphia. In 1812, during the War of 1812, Bridgeton sided with America against Great Britain and was burned by British forces as part of General George Washington's army march through New Jersey on its way toPhiladelphia. As a result of this event, many residents left for Philadelphia overlanders or took up occupations such as farming or manufacturing in order to escape military service; some even built artillery ranges around their homes in an effort to protect themselves from British raids during wartime. Over time Bridgeton's economy changed several times due to its location within easy reach of both Philadelphia and New York City but also because it became increasingly rural as businesses closed down farther into Township boundaries; however, its assets including natural resources like coal and oil remain highly visible today thanks to nearby production sites for Shell Oil Company's Ramapo Hills crude oil storage field and Sandusky shale gas reserves off Route 22 about east of town limits
