Bridgeton is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. Bridgeton is located on the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metropolitan area. Bridgeton was founded by Captain John Smith in 1740 as a small trading post on the upper Delaware River. In 1788 it became a borough under English rule; however, it reverted to British control after the American Revolution. On July 4, 1800, Bridgeton Became an incorporated town when all of Morris Township did so; and on November 3rd of that year its first mayor was chosen - James Kapp (1784-1852). The town's first store opened in 1802 and its first school in 1804. By 1830, there were over 50 stores and 100 inhabitants living in what would become known as "The Borough." In 1881, during Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War, some teachers from Newark decided to move to Bridgeton because of its good schools and low crime rates – although much remains unknown about this period due to lack of records or documentation from that time period. Many white Americans left for job opportunities in Northern states during this time period while African Americans were still struggling through Reconstruction efforts which continued until Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1865. One reason why many white Americans may have chosen not to stay during this difficult time was because they could see no future for themselves within their community once black Americans had regained full civil rights which took place starting with Johnson’s presidency beginning with Reconstruction ended on December 6th 1870 decreeing all former Confederate soldiers must be Freed and General William Tecumseh Sherman began his “White South” campaign against Jim Crow laws starting January 1st 1865 officially taking office November 16th 1865 ending slavery throughout America including North Carolina until March 14th 1902 when Congress abolished racial segregation becoming one man one vote effective April 15th 1913 ending race discrimination statewide except for those areas where such discrimination still persisted such as Baltimore City which secedes from Maryland effective February 11th 1920 becoming an independent city within Baltimore County) Although many people may have moved away during these times there are also many examples of how immigrants (legal or illegal) brought their families here over the years specifically students who came to study at local colleges or working professionals who needed affordable housing near universities or jobs marketplaces
