The first European settlers in what is now Bridgeton were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. The town was named after Brigitte de Vries (1575-1634), widow of Nicholas van der Sluisz, a high ranking official in Batavia (now Jakarta). She donated land for a small village near her home called 'Bridgeton'. In 1727–28 John Woolridge built what became known as Woolridge House on land he had purchased from Vries. Over time more buildings were erected around this important early community center including: The Woolridge School (1729), Presbyterian Church (1730), Masonic Lodge No. 2 (1735), White Horse Tavern (1738/39), and First Baptist Church (1740). During much of its history Bridgeton was a rural township with limited access to education due to its location on the Susquehanna River which formed most of its borders. However over time educational opportunities have improved for residents with access to better schools located within Philadelphia's suburbs or in neighboring townships such as Parsippany and Camden which have added their own amenities and attractions along with larger populations providing greater demand for services like healthcare, retail businesses, etc., making Bridgeton an attractive place for people looking for growth opportunity or quality life experiences. It is the smallest municipality in Mercer County and the second-smallest municipality east of Philadelphia. The name of Bridgeton comes from English settlers who named it for Briget, a maiden name of one of their ancestors. The first post office opened in 1821 and the town had its first incorporation on November 7, 1868. Bridgeton has been known for its apple orchards since before European settlement. In 1795, William Tryon purchased an orchard near what is now Bridgeton from the French colonists for $1 per acre (4¢ per bushel). Tryon made his apple trees grow as fast as possible to export his fruit to Europe and America. Tryons Orchard still produces apples today and provides local employment for many people in the community. The area that became Bridgeton was originally part of Dutch Township but was annexed by Mercer County on February 12, 1834. At that time, only rural areas were included within Mercer County; all of Middlesex Township (now parts of Burlington and Camden counties) remained within New Jersey’s borders until 1862 when they were integrated into Pennsylvania’s newly formed Delaware county.* By 1870, about two-thirds of residents in Bridgeton lived along Long Branch Road which connected Trenton withPhiladelphia via a short path across Linden Creek* In 1907–1908 during WWI there was significant damage to buildings in town caused by shellfire shells * * As World War II progressed Bombing raids increased against targets inside Borough which led to high loss rates among civilian innocent civilians especially women children men & elderly men especially those working at munitions plants throughout NJ including tens thousands employed at Point Pleasant Naval Yard & other places
