Bound Brook is one of the oldest cities in New Jersey and its original name was "Brunswick Township." It was renamed to "Bound Brook" in 1876 after the town of Brunswick, Maine. In 1799 John Stevens founded a mill on the confluence of the brooks which later became known as Stevensville after him and his son-in-law Anthony Lewis built a gristmill there in 1807. In 1830 Isaac Watts leased land east ofbound I-95 and began developing it into a township called Milton with boundaries that would include Bound Brook along River Road (now Uxbridge Road). On October 3rd, 1872, all of Burlington County except Bound Brook Township were merged into newly created Middlesex County under Governor George Biddle's executive order to speed up rural migration during the Panic of 1893. The name "Bound Brook" comes from the filename for an early Dutch map that showed the area around Bound Brook as part of what would become New Netherland. Bound Brook began as a small farming community and later became a manufacturing center for textiles and other products. The first Europeans to visit Bound Brook were French fishermen who sailed up the Delaware River in 1608; they named the river's mouth "Bois de la Croix," meaning 'brook of crosses.' In 1621, English colonists arrived at Newark Bay and founded Elizabeth Town on land that had been donated by Sir George Carteret; Elizabethtown was named after Queen Elizabeth I of England. In 1701, John Hammond purchased some additional land from Sir George Carteret and formed what would become Bound Brook Township. That same year, he built one of the first brick buildings in New Jersey – his home at 15 Broad Street – which still stands today. In 1714-1715, Samuel Eaton served as President of Monmouth County (then known as Middlesex County) during what is considered to be one of the most important periods in township history: this time period saw major changes within Monmouth County due to religious unrest throughout Europe; Eaton played a critical role in maintaining order while also working to improve transportation and communication infrastructure within his township. AfterwardboundBrook took on more importance as an agricultural society with large family farms producing hay and corn for local markets; until World War II these farms produced about 60% of allNJ housing output before being replaced by industry . In 1916-1917 proceedings were taken against him for not voting timely on $5 million worth of bonds authorization passed by the NJ Legislature (the largest amount ever voted on at that time). After successfully suing twice unsuccessfully prior thereto he received final approval from bothqua[nd]ers - becoming one OF THE FIRST BUSINESS MANagers IN NEW JERSEY AS AN AGENT FOR THE NEW JERSEY CONSTRUCTION FOUNDATION!
